Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from the Chicago Fire season 13 opener, “A Monster in the Field.”
Matt Casey and Sylvie Brett rode off into the sunset (aka moved to Portland) in Chicago Fire season 12, meaning another couple had to take their place in season 13. Casey and Brett were one of the central couples on the NBC procedural drama. However, after the two got married, they moved to Portland, where Casey took care of Andrew Darden’s sons after their mother went to prison. Now, Chicago Fire is without Casey and Brett, and it’s in dire need of a couple with a similar love story.
Of course, Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd are married (although Severide and Kidd’s marriage was rocky in Chicago Fire season 13). So they can’t follow in Casey and Brett’s footsteps. Jack Damon and Lizzie Novak’s rumored romance could be similar to Casey and Brett’s, but it’s too early to tell. Meanwhile, everyone else is either married or in a stable relationship. That leaves two characters with scenes in the season 13 opener that prove they’re capable replacements for Matt and Casey.
The on-again, off-again relationship between Sam Carver and Violet Mikami began at the end of Chicago Fire’s season 11. The show teased that the two might be attracted to each other. Then, in season 12, Carver and Violet gave in to their obvious chemistry. However, their relationship was limited to friends with benefits, as Violet didn’t want to fall in love with a first responder again after what happened to Evan Hawkins. Of course, love can’t be stopped, and Carver declared his love for Violet in the season 12 finale.
Unfortunately, the confession came during a heated fight between the two, which ended with Carver taking a six-week leave of absence. When Carver returned to Firehouse 51 in the Chicago Fire season 13 opener, he wasn’t alone. Violet, determined to make it up to Carver, tried to catch up with him but then stopped and saw a car with Texas plates pull up to the station. A woman got out of the car and kissed Carver, and Violet looked devastated.
Thanks to Carver’s new (and mysterious) girlfriend, his slow-burn romance with Violet continued in Chicago Fire season 13. She was another painful obstacle standing in the way of Carver and Violet getting together. However, Carver and Violet’s love story would have ended happily ever after (if they followed Brett and Casey’s rules) — it just took a while.
Similar to Casey and Brett, it was only a matter of time before Carver and Violet got together. They followed the same “will they/won’t they” pattern that defined Casey and Brett’s relationship for many seasons of Chicago Fire. Casey and Brett started out as friends because Casey was still with Gabby Dawson when they first met. But over time, feelings developed. Even when Casey and Brett knew they liked/loved each other, they were hesitant to start dating. They finally came to their senses and got married in Chicago Fire season 12, episode 6. Carver and Violet may have skipped a few steps that Casey and Brett took, but the ups and downs of their relationship paralleled the married couple’s journey. Just when viewers thought Carver and Violet would finally get together, the rug was pulled out from under them. The two characters of Chicago Fire season 13 clearly care about each other, but they both have issues they need to work through. When that happens (likely in season 13 or beyond), Carver and Violet are sure to have a great Chicago Fire love story.
