Production assistants working on Chicago Fire have voted to unionize, marking a significant step forward in Hollywood’s evolving labor landscape. The unanimous decision makes the NBC drama the first Chicago-based production to secure a successful NLRB election for production assistants.
Eighteen of 23 eligible workers voted in favor, with several ballots still under review. Once the election is certified, negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement will begin. Organizers say the goal is to ensure fair treatment, job security, and sustainable working conditions for production assistants.
The victory continues a wave of organizing led by Production Assistants United, which has successfully unionized multiple shows since 2023. Backed by LiUNA Local 724, the group recently secured wins on The Pitt, Abbott Elementary, and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
Advocates say each win brings the industry closer to normalizing union protections for one of television’s most overworked — and underrecognized — job categories.
