Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 6 “Birds of Prey” sees Severide and Pascal clash after a call that Severide thinks requires further investigation. In most situations, Pascal would be on his side. In fact, Pascal has proven he will have Firehouse 51’s back in the last two episodes, first coming to Violet’s aid after she has to deliver a baby during a call in order to save his life, and then allowing Severide and Kidd to investigate in Episode 5 “Down The Rabbit Hole” when they noticed their last call followed a disturbing pattern.
So, if Chief Pascal is pushing back against Severide, keeping secrets, and agreeing to “put this case in the backburner for now,” then it’s for a reason. Particularly considering the call involved ghost guns, which means something big is going on. And it is likely the reason Pascal agreed to bury whatever’s happening has to do with all the secrets we know he’s keeping.
But the thing Pascal might not know is that Severide is like a dog with a bone once he catches a whiff of something suspicious. Pascal compliments Stella Kidd for the very same reason at the end of Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 5 “Down the Rabbit Hole,” but Stella isn’t the only one who will not give up. Except this time it’s likely that if Severide keeps pushing, he will find something Pascal really doesn’t want him to find.
In many ways, this feels like it could be an inflection point for Pascal and Firehouse 51. He isn’t Boden, hasn’t tried to be, but Pascal has actually fit in better than anyone had a right to expect considering the shoes he was filling. And yet, he is a man of many secrets and a very strange relationship with his wife. That always felt like something the show would have to pick back on if he was ever going to fit in. Because Pascal has been a decent boss so far but one thing he isn’t – and is, in fact, very far from being, is family. And that’s what Firehouse 51 is.
That doesn’t mean he can’t get there, but for that, his secrets need to come out. And if anyone’s going to not just figure it out, but be willing to confront him about them, it’s Kelly Severide. However, knowing Chicago Fire, it won’t just reveal all of Pascal’s secrets right away, it will give us just a little hint of what he’s hiding, enough to make us want to know more and then leave it there.
For now, whatever the Chief is hiding, this team won’t necessarily have his back. They might, however, if he came clean with them. Whether Pascal realizes that or not yet, it’s hard to tell.
