The preview for Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 5 “Down the Rabbit Hole” is all about Severide (Taylor Kinney). Or, it’s all about making us worry about Kelly Severide. It’s just another call, except Severide is saying “It’s raining gas in there,” Chief Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) is saying “One spark and this guy gets incinerated,” and then of course, there’s seemingly a spark. All while Severide is inside the car helping the victim. Or is he?

It’s very rare for previews to give away the whole story, so the show seemingly wants us to worry about Kelly Severide, but is unlikely to actually hurt Kelly Severide in a permanent way. Which doesn’t mean they won’t hurt him a little. Severide is, after all, very much the emotional center of this show in many ways, and if he’s hurt a lot of people will suffer. Including his wife, Stella Kidd. So, even though it’s unlikely Severide will end up gravely hurt, we can’t rule out a near-death experience.

The synopsis for the episode promises “Kidd and Severide investigate a trucking company responsible for a string of accidents. Herrmann recruits Kylie to help get new radios,” so that seems to indicate Severide will be just fine. But it’s always a good storytelling device to make characters worry. Particularly now that Severide has even more family to worry about him. There’s, of course, his wife Stella Kidd. But during Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 4 “Through the Skin,” Severide also makes peace with his brother Damon, after Damon accused him of being just like their father, Benny Severide. In fact, Severide gets to prove he is nothing like Benny by going out of his way to help Damon land a spot in another Firehouse. And though it did take a little gentle prodding from his wife, that’s what a healthy relationship is all about.

Elsewhere on Chicago Fire, Pascal is on the scene while Severide almost gets blown up, and Pascal’s storyline this season has been one of the most interesting parts of the show in this early season. He seems to like Severide fine, though he’s been a little short with him at times, and he clearly doesn’t really like Stella, but in Episode 4 “Through the Skin” he goes out of his way to help Violet (Hanako Greensmith) after her EMS license is suspended after she performed a C-section during a call. Now, why would Pascal go out of his way to help Violet? The show gives us no clue as to the answer, but that is an interesting thread for the show to pull on going forward.

Personel-wise, Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 5 “Down the Rabbit Hole” will give Firehouse 51 a new look, with Ritter joining Truck and Kylie joining Engine. It’s the perfect solution for Stella’s floater woes and for Kylie too. She’s a character who deserved to be part of Firehouse 51, a character we wanted to be part of the show permanently, but one that rightfully felt like she didn’t want to be in Stella’s shadow forever. Now, she gets to work with Herrmann. Not a bad trade-off.

For now, though, the next episode of Chicago Fire wants us to worry about Severide. And we are worried. But not too much. If there’s someone we believe will make it through on this show, it’s Kelly Severide.
