Chicago Fire boss previews Die Hard-Esque episode of Severide: ‘We know Taylor Kinney will do well’
Do It’ Sound the alarm! On Wednesday’s Chicago Fire, Severide goes missing, along with one of his fire trucks, in the middle of the night. But the firefighter isn’t absent from the thrilling episode
In fact, Taylor Kinney’s character has a pretty Die Hard-like adventure as the mystery of who took the truck and what they wanted for it unfolds, showrunner Andrea Newman tells TVLine via email.
Read on to find out how Stella is coping with her husband’s disappearance, what the new firefighter might have to do with the mystery, and what Kinney thinks of the special (which marks the show’s 250th episode!).
This week is another episode of the show, and you feel it right from the start (we don’t often see the fire department getting ready for bed!). What was the idea for this story? And what’s exciting about it?
I’m so glad you picked up on it, about everyone getting ready for bed! We’re trying to remember if we’ve seen that on the show before. Our awesome writer Matt Whitney wrote this story (based on a true event!), and we’re excited to give Severide his own action/thriller episode and see what it does to Kidd and 51 at the same time.
Severide’s been stuck behind a desk lately, working at the fire station for Boden, doing paperwork, etc., and in a way he’s like a caged animal ready to break out and tear some things apart. And that’s exactly what he does in this episode!
Severide and Stella have been through a lot over the past few seasons. How is Stella handling the disappearance of her husband?
This is a difficult time for Kidd. She has to put her emotions aside while she goes in search of her husband. Some alarming suspicions arise along the way.
Can you tease how the new Damon and what Ritter heard last week played into this episode?
Damon is now in Ritter’s crosshairs in a big way, and Ritter has some decisions to make. The consequences of those decisions will definitely peel back layers of Damon’s character.
I have to imagine it was a different experience for the cast, especially Taylor Kinney, while filming the episode. What did Taylor think of the storyline and the different challenges you threw at him in this hour?
Taylor loves things like this. He loves action and is a very athletic guy. All of our cast members train with real firefighters on a regular basis, and Taylor loves that kind of work. As soon as the idea of a Die Hard episode featuring Severide came up in the writers’ room, we knew he would be a hit.
