Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) was responsible for the most memorable moment of Chicago Fire season 11. Despite no longer being part of the main cast, the character decided to show up and shock everyone by getting on one knee and proposing to Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer).
It was a shocking moment made all the more memorable by the fact that the scene cut to black before we could find out Brett’s answer! We’ve spent the last six months waiting to find out what happened after Casey proposed, and we’ve finally gotten some insight in terms of what we can expect.
Casey will appear in multiple season 12 episodes
During a recent interview with Variety, Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman confirmed what we all were secretly hoping: Casey’s return. The character will be back in the mix starting with the season 12 premiere, and will reportedly play a huge part in Brett’s decision to leave the show.
Newman also shed light on the ways in which Casey will impact Brett’s remaining time at the 51:
Jesse Spencer will be back — our beloved Matt Casey. We can’t live without him. He’s truly the best… We will find out pretty quickly what Brett’s plans are, but her plans — made with the best of intentions — don’t go as she wants them to. So we’ll find out a lot quickly and then things will change; there will be a rollercoaster.”
Things rarely go according to plan on Chicago Fire, and Casey and Brett’s romance is a testament to that. Still, the notion that Brett would run into personal problems while hashing out what could be the biggest decision of her life is fascinating, and suggests that the character will stick around for longer than some fans initially thought.
Brettsey will experience setbacks in the season premiere
This is a smart move on the part of Chicago Fire writers, as it will give fans more time to spend with Casey and Brett, while giving distance between their exit and that of Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende), who is slated to leave early on in season 12.
Casey and Brett have more loose ends to tie up, and plus, they still have a lot of personal things to sort out, since they were technically broken up at the time that Casey proposed. Whatever happens between them is sure to be wildly entertaining.
