The writers haven’t forgotten about Brett and Casey!
Chicago Fire has had lots of couples come and go over the years. We just saw one of them, Stellaride, decide to adopt a child in a recent episode. It can be extremely satisfying to watch characters find the right one for them and ride off into the sunset, ostensibly offscreen.
It can be tough, though, when we want to know what happened to them, or how they are doing. Well, thankfully, Chicago Fire is going to satiate this desire. Andrea Newman, Fire’s showrunner, confirmed that we will be getting updates on a couple that left during season 12 and moved to Oregon.
Fans will learn more about Brettsey
We are of course talking about Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer). These two tied the knot and decided to start a new life together in a new state. There has been a reference here or there since their exit, but by and large, we don’t know how they are doing.
The current season of Chicago Fire is going to provide some much needed updates. “[Brett] and Casey are invoked a bunch in the future,” she told TV Line. Newman also pulled the curtain back on the approach that Chicago Fire writers take with characters who have left the show.
As far as they are concerned, if they are alive then they have a story, and can be integrated back into the show at any point. “It’s so funny because we never think of these characters [Brett and Casey] as gone,” Newman explained. This is a very encouraging sign for fans who are still hoping that we get to see Brett and/or Casey make cameos in future episodes.
Killmer and Spencer are both willing to return
Kara Killmer told NBC that she would be more than happy to return as Brett if the right storyline and situation presented itself. “Oh, absolutely. The door is wide open,” she said. “Any time they wanna call, I will be there. It is a fantastic show, great people.”
Jesse Spencer, who left before Killmer, and came back to help round out her character’s storyline, feels the same way. He acknowledged that he already came back once, and there are currently no plans to bring him back, but he would be willing if the context made sense. “We’ll leave that to the future,” he opined. “We’ll throw it to the gods and see what they say.”
While a full on return may never happen, it’s nice knowing that we will get updates on Brettsey’s life as a couple!
