It’s been a week since Charles L. was eliminated from The Golden Bachelorette, but Bachelor Nation is still buzzing over his departure. The 66-year-old retired financial analyst from Pennsylvania quickly became a fan favorite due to his gentle nature, humor, and positive outlook on life.
Charles captured hearts during a group date when he helped his team win a kickball game, despite having never played the sport before. Fans were further moved when he opened up to fellow contestant Guy about the devastating loss of his wife, who passed away suddenly from an aneurysm six years ago. When Joan Vassos, the Golden Bachelorette, said her emotional goodbye to Charles, telling him, “You changed my life,” viewers were left heartbroken.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Charles, who is currently traveling in China, reflected on his experience, the support he’s received from fans, and the possibility of being the next Golden Bachelor.
On Joining The Golden Bachelorette
Charles revealed that he was surprised when the casting department reached out to him shortly after submitting his application. “Maybe it’s my personality,” he speculated. “When I talked to them, it felt very natural, like I was talking to old friends.”
Although he had little experience with reality TV, having only watched a few episodes with his daughter, Charles decided to take the plunge. His life story, which includes coming to America from China with just $20 in his pocket, added depth to his appeal. He explained that in the past, many people in China lived with very little, and his decision to move to the U.S. at 27 was motivated by a desire to expand his horizons and improve his knowledge.
How His Approach to Dating Has Changed
Before the show, Charles admitted that he hadn’t dated much since his wife’s death. He felt unsure about reentering the dating scene and worried about how his family and friends might react. However, during his time on The Golden Bachelorette, he realized it was okay to grieve but also important to move forward.
“I was kind of in a sad mood before the show, but the conversations I had with Joan and the other contestants helped me see that it’s okay to seek happiness for yourself,” he said.
Life After The Golden Bachelorette
Although Charles is currently traveling, fans have been eager to reach out to him. “It’s a little secret right now,” he teased when asked if any women had contacted him since his appearance on the show. He’s received many messages but hasn’t had the chance to read them all due to technical limitations while abroad.
He also touched on the lighter moments of his Golden Bachelorette journey, like the kickball game, which he described as his favorite part of the experience. Despite being new to the game, he performed surprisingly well and helped secure a win for his team.
Charles also became a fan of Quaker oatmeal during the kickball date and joked that his love for the breakfast staple might have contributed to his fitness. “I was the only person who didn’t get hurt during the game,” he said with a laugh, crediting his daily oatmeal habit.
His Daughters’ Reactions to His Time on the Show
When asked about his daughters’ thoughts on his Chippendales dance, Charles admitted they were likely shocked. Although dancing isn’t his strong suit, he participated in the group activity with enthusiasm. “I’m not a good dancer, but I enjoyed myself,” he said, recalling how his daughters had initially reacted with, “Oh, Dad. Oh, boy.”
On Being the Next Golden Bachelor
The question on everyone’s mind is whether Charles would consider becoming the next Golden Bachelor. The internet has embraced him, and fans are eager to see him return to the franchise. Charles seemed open to the possibility, saying, “If the opportunity knocks on my door, I’ll consider it.”
For now, Charles is enjoying his travels and the love he’s received from fans, but the idea of him stepping into the spotlight once again is one that Bachelor Nation would be more than happy to support.
The Golden Bachelorette airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
