Channing Dungey Reveals Why Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Isn’t Greenlit Yet

Warner Bros. TV head Channing Dungey explains what’s keeping Stuart Fails to Save the Universe from getting greenlit. Initially announced in 2023, the Stuart (Kevin Sussman)-centric Big Bang Theory project is set to be the third spinoff series in the sitcom’s universe, following Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. Earlier this year, it was announced that the show would focus on Sussman’s character after secrecy from Chuck Lorre, with Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie reprising their roles as Denise, Bert, and Barry, respectively.

In an interview with Deadline, Dungey reveals the real reason why Stuart Fails to Save the Universe hasn’t been greenlit yet. The Warner Bros. TV CEO stressed that the scripts are still works in progress, but they are gearing up for approval and are “hopeful for good news soon.” She further teased that the material is “very, very funny” from what she has seen so far. Read Dungey’s comment below:

[Show co-creators] Chuck [Lorre], Zak [Penn] and Bill [Prady] are hard at work writing stuff. We’ve seen some material at the studio, and we’ve had some creative conversations with Max, so we are hopeful for good news soon. [The scripts] are creative, they are imaginative, and they are, most importantly, very, very funny.

What This Means For Stuart Fails To Save The Universe

News Might Be Coming Very Soon

Dungey’s comments suggest that the studio is actively pursuing Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and they are very close to getting the spinoff series greenlit (hopefully), which means more updates and news might be coming in the next couple of months. In the flagship, Stuart is a lonely comic book store owner who became close with Raj in season 6. With the spinoff centering around the four recurring fan-favorite characters, Dungey also teased that more Big Bang Theory alums could be reprising their roles in the new show.

Bowie previously took to Instagram to offer a first look at the new show by sharing three behind-the-scenes photos, with one revealing that they were doing table reads ahead of shooting, hinting the pilot was at the very least completed and ready to shoot in order to present it to Max. Dungey’s comment about the scripts being very funny and creative is another good sign that the chance of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe being greenlit is very high.

Our Take On Stuart Fails To Save The Universe

Stuart Fails To Save The Universe Could Bring Back More Big Bang Characters

It’s been years since The Big Bang Theory ended, but the hype for the franchise is still very much alive over the two spinoff series. The Young Sheldon prequel was one of the most watched shows since 2017, while Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage has been a ratings success, in addition to securing massive viewership. The latter has remained a consistent enough success that CBS finally confirmed Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 in February.

Billed as a direct sequel to The Big Bang Theory, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is undoubtedly an appealing project for the franchise’s longtime fans. Even though details are under wraps, Barry, Stuart, and Bert’s return strongly indicates that the series will take place around CalTech and Pasadena, the main location in the flagship, which essentially opens the doorway for The Big Bang Theory main characters’ return.
