CBS’ SEAL Team is aiming straight for the Season 3 finale, which airs this Wednesday in a later time slot

In the season’s tentative finale (two episodes left unfinished), Jason is thinking about their new HVT being the son of a terrorist leader his team took out years ago as he accompanies Mandy on a trip into town, where she’ll at least try to make amends to the widow of a murdered local asset. Meanwhile, the rest of Bravo Team is pulled into a time-sensitive mission—sans Jason—that could help them find their target, Azfaar Al-Hazred.

Even though the season ends early, will the finale still pack a punch? TVLine spoke with showrunner David Boreanaz about what’s coming next, as well as what’s ahead, should Season 4 be renewed.

There’s a lot going on this season, with a lot of uncertainty for each of the guys. They’re all making decisions about their futures. Why do you think Season 3 is the right time to explore that?

Well, it takes a while to get into the development of each character. You have to earn that right to do that. When you start out, you’re lucky enough to get a pilot and get picked up, you’re working with the best characters you can, and it takes time to get there. Our job as the actors who are playing those characters is to deliver the right amount of ingredients throughout the process to make the audience want to invest, and I think that’s what we’ve achieved. Especially as we head into Season 3. With Jason, there was a really deep analysis in Season 2 with him, and Season 3 was just an emotional rollercoaster, so I think we’ve achieved that.

It seems almost impossible—like, there has to be a perfect storm—for Bravo Team to end up 100 percent intact at the end of this shortened season.

We were cut short by the time we finished two episodes—everyone has that problem, on other shows—so the ending of our season is not how it was supposed to end. But [this episode] definitely has a surprising twist for a character, at least for Jason. I would say that. But we also come to some resolutions with some characters, which also opens up more doors. When you resolve a particular thing that a character is going through, you open that door and you go through another door, and there are more doors to open. When you resolve something, there’s always something on the other end that says, “Oh, what about this?”

But at the end of the planned ending, if you finish Episode 22, is there more closure?

There’s some uncertainty [coming out of] 22. But [Episode] 21, there’s a big suspense from 21 to 22. It’s a big moment… how should I say it… that leaves you hanging on the edge.

Lindell kept pointing out that Jason was too old for this. What do you know, the average age of a Tier One Operator? Like, is someone like Jason getting old?
I know that there are a lot of operators out there [that age] who are still crushing it, and rolling, so it’s not something that you don’t see. I know that the guy who was on the Bin Laden raid—I won’t say what he did—is still leading. So, yeah, I would say there’s only a small percentage that reach that age, but they do exist.
