CBS Reboots the ‘FBI’ Universe After Franchise Shake-Up md11

The FBI franchise begins its rebuilding not a year after FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International were canceled by CBS. Dick Wolf’s non-NBC procedural franchise underwent a major transformation during the last TV cycle. Despite their relative success, FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International were among the canceled shows by CBS in 2025.

Understandably, there was an uproar when CBS pulled the plug on two beloved shows. The only saving grace from their cancelation was that it was long before their respective finales, allowing the writers to come up with proper endings. That said, while FBI: Most Wanted was able to craft a great closure, FBI: International‘s finale was a disappointing send-off.

FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International bowing out means that only FBI season 8 is the only show from the franchise that has debuted in the 2025-2026 network TV cycle thus far. That said, that is about to change, as “Captured” begins laying the foundation of the revamped universe.

FBI Season 8, Episode 2 Lays The Foundation For Its CIA Spinoff

On the heels of Dani Rhodes’ death, Jubal’s team moves on with a new case that gets a little more complicated. It starts with a museum heist and ends up being an attempt to free an international criminal. Throughout the outing, Vorpe oversees the operation, although she doesn’t really get in action with Maggie, OA, and Scola. Admittedly, her introduction in FBI season 8, episode 2 is a bit odd, especially considering her final conversation with Jubal. In this particular instance, however, it’s safe to say that Vorpe is someone from the CIA. After the cancelation of FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International, Wolf Entertainment and NBC are set to launch a brand new FBI spinoff in CIA. The project was supposed to debut alongside FBI season 9 in fall 2025, but a hiccup in production resulted in its delayed premiere.

What We Know Thus Far About FBI’s CIA Spinoff

FBI‘s CIA spinoff will be spearheaded by Tom Ellis, who plays Hart Hoxton, a rogue but skillful CIA officer. He is joined by Chicago Med alum, Nick Gehlfuss, as FBI Special Agent Bill Goodman — a more straightaced character that will ground Hoxton. Natalee Linez and Michael Michelle round up the cast as both CIA members. No word on whether Vorpe will eventually join CIA after her appearance in FBI season 8, episode 2.

FBI season 7 was supposed to include a backdoor pilot for its newest spinoff, but that was scrapped as the details for the new show still weren’t nailed down yet in time for an early launch. Now, CIA is scheduled for a midseason premiere. No official release date has been set, but production has been ongoing for quite a while now.
