CBS orders “Young Sheldon” sequel series — and no, it’s not “Old Sheldon”
Montana Jordan and Emily Osment will reprise their roles as Georgie and Mandy in the upcoming spinoff.
The Big Bang Theory universe is expanding once more.
CBS has officially ordered a Young Sheldon sequel series for the 2024-2025 TV season. You may understandably wonder, “Isn’t The Big Bang Theory technically a Young Sheldon sequel series? Don’t we already know what’s going to happen when Young Sheldon becomes Old Young Sheldon?” The answer to both questions is yes, which may be why the untitled spinoff won’t actually focus on Sheldon (so please keep all bazingas to yourself).
Instead, the new series will revolve around Sheldon’s brother Georgie Cooper (Montana Jordan) and his wife, Mandy (Emily Osment), as they raise their family in Texas while navigating the challenges of adulthood, parenting, and marriage.
While Sheldon’s brother has been a core character since Young Sheldon debuted, even appearing briefly on The Big Bang Theory, Mandy arrived in the fifth season. She began a relationship with Georgie after meeting him at Meemaw’s laundromat, and after a series of twists and turns, gave birth to their daughter, Constance, and accepted his proposal in season 6.
The new show is a multicam comedy created by Chuck Lorre, Steven Molaro, and Steve Holland, the producing team behind both Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory. This adds yet another title to the list of shows Lorre has produced for CBS, including Mom and Two and Half Men.
“It has been a privilege to spend the last seven years with Sheldon and the Cooper family and now this wonderful journey will continue with Georgie and Mandy,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, in a statement. “Chuck and both Steves have done a masterful job developing these characters and entertaining generations of fans with relatable, heartwarming stories brought to life by Montana and Emily. We eagerly look forward to the next chapter in this beloved universe.”
News of the spinoff series comes as Young Sheldon is in the midst of airing its seventh and final season. The series is set to contain with back-to-back episodes on May 16.
