‘Bridgerton’ Star Nicola Coughlan on Season 4 and ‘Multiple Kinds of Romance’
Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan is teasing what to expect in the upcoming fourth season of the hit series.
In an interview Wednesday with Good Morning America at the 2024 Time 100 Next Gala in New York City, Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington on the Regency-inspired show, said her character is now “happily together” with Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).
“It’s exciting to play a woman who’s happy with a really cute child,” she said. “It feels like they’ve been through everything the last time.”
“So they’re going to go back and just love each other and have the most wonderful time together,” she added.
The show focuses on the backstories of specific Bridgerton characters each season, following Colin and Penelope’s friendship-turned-lovers romance in season 3. The third season also revealed Penelope’s secret identity as Lady Whistledown, an anonymous writer who details high-society gossip in a pamphlet, and how that revelation played into her relationship with Colin.
Next season, the backstory of Colin’s brother Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) will be explored. In September, it was revealed that his love interest, Sophie Baek, will be played by Yerin Ha.
Coughlan didn’t reveal much about what to expect, but said that Thompson and Ha are “working hard to be our leads this time around.”
“They’re doing a fantastic, fantastic job,” she said.
Coughlan added that she admires the show for focusing on a variety of love stories, including the upcoming queer storyline with Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza) that was hinted at last season.
“I love Bridgerton because it’s a show about all different kinds of love stories,” she said. “So everyone should feel represented in it.”
