Bridgerton spinoff, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, dropped a new teaser trailer revealing the series’ release date.
Per Deadline, the trailer gave fans a new look at the prequel show, which follows a young Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) and her romance with King George (Corey Mylchreest). Their marriage results in a tremendous cultural shift, ultimately creating the multicultural world seen in Bridgerton. Golda Rosheuvel reprises her role as Queen Charlotte, along with fellow Bridgerton stars Adjoa Andoh as Lady Agatha Danbury, Ruth Gemmell as Lady Violet Bridgerton and Hugh Sachs as Brimsley. The series hits Netflix on May 4.
Queen Charlotte and King George’s Love Story
Queen Charlotte’s release coincides with two years since Netflix announced it had ordered the prequel with Bridgerton creator Shonda Rhimes, head of Shondaland, penning the script. Despite her popularity, the character did not originally appear in the popular romance novels by Julia Quinn. Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s head of global TV, spoke at the time about the character’s popularity and fan interest in seeing how Bridgerton’s open world began.
“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton,” she said. “Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled.”
Netflix provided the first look at Queen Charlotte in September 2022 with a short clip revealing the moment the soon-to-be queen met King George while attempting to flee. Besides the prequel series, Netflix also teased Season 3 of Bridgerton, which sees Nicola Coughlan’s Penelope Featherington and Luke Newton’s Colin Bridgerton finding romance together after several years of friendship. Meanwhile, Penelope must face the potential fallout of her work as Lady Whistledown after Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie), her best friend, discovered her secret. The upcoming season continues the series’ famously inclusive casting by putting Penelope front and center, making the Bridgerton star a plus-sized romantic lead.
