Bridgerton Season 3 Will Further Explore Characters’ Backstories From Queen Charlotte
Bridgerton season 3 will further explore characters’ backstories from Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, according to showrunner Jess Brownell.
The spin-off series, which premiered on Netflix in May 2023, follows the eponymous monarch during two timelines – one set during the present-day Bridgerton timeline in 1817 and the other set in 1761 as Charlotte meets and marries George III. Bridgerton season 3, which returns to Netflix in May 2024, will follow another member of the titular family, Colin, and his romance with Penelope.
During a recent with Entertainment Weekly, Brownell was asked about the possibility of plot developments between Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) and Violet (Ruth Gemmell) from Queen Charlotte carrying over into Bridgerton season 3. The showrunner, who recently replaced Chris Van Dusen, says that audiences will “see some further exploration of their backstory.” Read her full response below:
It’s certainly something I had to be mindful of when writing season 3. Shonda [Rhimes] and I would chat and make sure that what was happening in the past, or the near past, matched up with our present day for season 3. You’ ll see some further exploration of their backstory.
What To Expect Between Lady Danbury & Violet In Bridgerton Season 3
Although its main focus was chronicling Queen Charlotte and King George’s romance, the spin-off series also expanded on the backstory between Agatha Danbury and Violet Bridgerton. Queen Charlotte reveals that Agatha had a romantic relationship with Violet’s father, Lord Ledger, which complicates the friendship between the two. However, the discussions between Violet and Lady Danbury during the present-day timeline in 1817, especially Queen Charlotte episode 5’s “garden in bloom” exchange, underscore the significance of their friendship, especially compared to the typically shallow connections formed within the Ton.
In addition to solidifying the strength of her friendship with Lady Danbury, Violet’s “garden in bloom” speech also showcased a different side of the Bridgerton family matriarch. Before, she was primarily portrayed as a widowed maternal figure whose hope for romance died with her late husband, Edmund. However, her opening up to Lady Danbury in Queen Charlotte episode 5 puts a potential romance, or possibly the pursuit of love, on the table for Violet in Bridgerton season 3 or beyond. Whether this is what Brownell has in mind for Bridgerton season 3 remains to be seen.
Bridgerton season 3, part 1 releases May 16, 2024 on Netflix, followed by part 2 on June 13.
