The Rookie star Arjay Smith has revealed a trailer for his new short film. The ABC procedural, created by Alexi Hawley of The Recruit, continues following John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and his LAPD career, after becoming the oldest rookie on staff. Since The Rookie season 3, Smith has portrayed James Murray, an advocate for his local community who is dedicated to reforming the criminal justice system. His romance with Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) has also become a significant storyline as the series progresses.
Outside The Rookie, Arjay Smith has many credits and recently shared the trailer for his upcoming short film Halfway. The video, posted on his Instagram, begins with Smith’s character being questioned about potential nerves ahead of meeting someone. It then focuses on a touching first encounter between him and another character portrayed by Tarik Lowe.
What This Means For The Rookie Star
The New Short Film May Be Coming Soon
Releasing a trailer is an encouraging sign for fans of Smith and The Rookie, who are eager to see what he does next. The caption on Instagram teases that his short film is nearing a premiere, but also includes a hashtag, which suggests that Halfway could begin playing at festivals. Overall, not much is known about the project, apart from Smith being involved and Crawford Talents co-executive producing it. Halfway is directed by Michael Charles Roman and penned by co-star Lowe, who serves as a producer as well.
Smith previously appeared in Sons of Anarchy and Major Crimes, and played Max Lewicki in three seasons of Perception. He was also featured in the Roland Emmerich sci-fi movie The Day After Tomorrow and Introducing Billy Bradley, another short film directed by Roman. The character of James, as portrayed by Smith, has been a key part of The Rookie for several seasons. Throughout the series, he and Nyla were married and welcomed a child, and when James was last shown in The Rookie season 7, he was recovering from a gunshot wound and continuing to promote reform.
