Breaking News: ‘The Rookie’ Spin-Off Script Gets a Major Update – Here’s What Fans Can Expect!

The Rookie has proven to be one of ABC’s most-loved shows, given its consistent viewership and a dedicated fan base. Unsurprisingly, ABC developed a spin-off in 2023, but for various reasons, The Rookie: Feds failed to move past Season 1. The network has reportedly been looking for another The Rookie spin-off with franchise boss Alexi Hawley at the helm. Apart from the initial announcement, much about it has remained a mystery. “I feel really good about the script. Ultimately, we’re waiting to hear what the needs are [at ABC], but I feel very positive about it,” Hawley told TV Line when asked about the untitled spin-off’s progress. However, The Recruit‘s creator cautioned against too much optimism given the fate that his Netflix drama met recently, saying:

“My caveat, said with a genuine laugh, is that I also felt very positive about Season 3 of [Netflix’s] The Recruit, and it ended up not happening. But look, it’s apples and oranges. We just got a Season 8 on Rookie, the show works really well for them…. Beyond that, it’s out of my hands.”

Indeed, it had been looking quite positive for The Recruit after Season 2, but Netflix announced that they wouldn’t be picking up a second season of the Noah Centineo-led drama series. “Netflix, they have a certain mandate that they need to fill, and I’m very proud of the show, very grateful to our audience. We have a pretty strong cult following. And with Netflix, it just didn’t really fit what it was that they needed, I suppose,” Centineo said about the surprise cancellation.

‘The Rookie’ Will Be Back for Season 8

As viewers await the Washington-based spin-off, the flagship series continues on ABC on Tuesdays. In tonight’s episode, “The team helps Skip Tracer Randy (Flula Borg) when his new love interest is kidnapped. Meanwhile, Angela (Alyssa Diaz) and Nyla (Mekia Cox) enlist their moms to help catch a con artist, and Wesley (Shawn Ashmore) is threatened to drop a case.”

On May 13, “John (Nathan Fillion) and Harper work together to catch Oscar (Matthew Glave); Angela investigates a bank robbery; Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim (Eric Winter) learn to adapt to her new schedule, and Miles’ (Deric Augustine) first date takes an unexpected turn,” according to the official logline for Episode 18 “The Good, The Bad, And The Oscars.” Meanwhile, viewers will spend more time with their favorite characters when the show returns for Season 8 later this year.
