BREAKING NEWS: Fran Drescher on ‘Nanny’ Reboot and Being ‘a New Type of Barbara Walters’

On the heels of the end of the actors’ strike, Fran Drescher reveals if she’s up for doing a reboot of beloved sitcom ‘The Nanny’

Fran Drescher isn’t looking to revive the flashy girl from Flushing. In a new interview, Drescher shared her thoughts on a reboot for CBS’ The Nanny, where she starred as the title character for six seasons in the nineties.

“I can’t even think about doing a sitcom right now,” she said when asked about a possible revival by The Hollywood Reporter. The remarks from Drescher, who is also the president of the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA, come after a months-long actors’ strike.

She continued, “I’m so exhausted by all this. But I never say never to anything. The show that I did is as popular today as it was 30 years ago. The fashion, the comedy, the look. So, it’s still very much alive and well. And during the strike, I wasn’t able to really push forward stuff about The Nanny, and that was kind of sad for me because normally I’m always doing stuff on social media to support the show. But there was so much that was taken from the show by people that became part of the strike.”

During the strike, HBO’s streaming platform Max had The Nanny front and center for shows to watch. Drescher weighed in on the move and said, “I don’t diss anyone for being smart and doing something that is useful or helpful to them while I’m in negotiations with them. I’m actually very happy that The Nanny is on Max.”As for her next project, Drescher told THR, “There are a lot of options” including a possible book and a venture into journalism.

“I feel like there could be a future where maybe I could be a new type of Barbara Walters,” she said of the late icon.

“And I’ll probably continue to do interesting parts in indie films. I was supposed to do two over the summer, and of course they got postponed. One was Rob Reiner’s This Is Spinal Tap 2, and one was an Adam Sandler-Ben Affleck movie.”

As for another sitcom? Drescher continued that she has other things in mind.

“I have to really think about that because it’s a big commitment and it’s a mountain I’ve climbed already a few times. And there are new mountains to climb.”
