Guess what, 9-1-1 fans? It looks like we’re about to leave 118 behind once again, as show co-creator Ryan Murphy has dropped some shocking news that no one saw coming.
Since the hit drama first aired on Fox in January 2018, people have fallen in love with a show that revolves around the first responders of a unit within the Los Angeles Fire Department. What’s more, the series expanded just two years later, with the debut of 9-1-1: Lone Star in January 2020. Well, it looks like the world of 9-1-1 (currently airing on ABC) is adding a new city to its ever-growing roster, as Ryan revealed to Variety that he’s working on a second spinoff that will air on ABC. And if that wasn’t enough, it looks like fans will get a chance to see the new series instead.
“[Co-creator] Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing and we’re hoping to air next fall,” he told the outlet on Oct. 1. “We’re launching a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s exciting. And 9-1-1 moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday nights. [Fans] obviously loved that, so we’re giving them another show that I really love.”
While details are being kept to a minimum, this is certainly exciting news for 9-1-1 fans! The news is also timely, as 9-1-1: Lone Star is coming to an end with its fifth and final season, which is airing right now on Fox.
So, what’s the reason behind the ending of 9-1-1: Lone Star? As Ryan explained to the publication, there was a simple reason why the show was canceled. “It’s sad, we all love 9-1-1: Lone Star, but the financials just weren’t right,” he said. “It’s a Disney property that used to be on Fox, and it was never going to work. And we’ve had it for a long time.”
Well, with that information in our arsenal, we can only hold our breath until we find out which new city will show us its first responders battling emergencies!
