Bode and Gabriela Simply Don’t Work as a Couple

Seasons 2 and 3 already demonstrated why Bode and Gabriela are a poor romantic match. Their storyline during Gabriela’s engagement to Diego Moreno (Rafael de la Fuente)—a genuinely likable partner—was difficult to root for. Bode had pushed Gabriela away when he returned to prison, but once he was back at Three Rock, she couldn’t keep her distance.

Their dynamic took an even more destructive turn in Season 3. In “What the Bride Said,” Gabriela accidentally injected a fellow firefighter with medication they were allergic to, and Bode tried to lie and cover it up, a decision that could have ended both of their careers. Gabriela recognized the truth: the two of them together tend to spiral. Her concerns proved valid, yet the show continued the uneven, on-again, off-again romance.

Gabriela’s struggle with depression, culminating in a drunken fling with her ex-boyfriend and fire captain Jake Crawford (Jordan Calloway), only added to the melodrama. While Bode and Gabriela undeniably have chemistry, it reads more as intense attraction than healthy love. Their Season 2 love triangle with Diego highlighted this contrast clearly: Diego represented stability and logic, Bode represented intensity and passion. But passion alone doesn’t make a relationship worth rooting for—especially one that repeatedly creates chaos for both characters.
