Blue Bloods’ Spinoff Shocker: Sean Reagan Recast as Boston Blue Starts Fresh

The Reagan family has acquired a new member — just not in the way we were expecting. On the heels of Donnie Wahlberg’s announcement that table reads had begun for his Blue Bloods spin-off, Boston Blue, it’s been revealed that his character’s son has been recast. When the CBS procedural arrives on screens this fall, Danny Reagan’s (Wahlberg) son, Sean, will be played by Mika Amonsen (Thanksgiving). Andrew Terraciano previously appeared as the child of Detective Danny Reagan during the original show’s 14-season run, but, according to Deadline, the creative team decided to go in a different direction for the next chapter. That different direction will see Sean following in the family’s footsteps and seeking out a career in law enforcement.

When audiences pick up with Sean, he’ll have relocated right alongside his father to Boston. It’s there that he’ll join the city’s police department as a patrolman. For Sean, his decision to move north was all about getting a fresh start and breaking out from the stamp already left in New York by his family. With his father there, Sean will have the opportunity to grow closer to one another through both ways of father-son bonding and working hard at the career they both love. Right now, Sean is the only character from the original series set to be part of Boston Blue, but Wahlberg has made it clear that other Reagans will more than likely swing by as Danny and Sean plant their roots outside of New York City.

As for what Wahlberg has teased about those other family connections, he most recently said,

“New York and Boston are really close. They’re not that far apart… Blue Bloods is important to the audience, it’s important to me, it’s important to Sonequa [Martin-Green, Danny’s new partner]. She’s a Blue Bloods fan. She’s my partner, and she’s a Blue Bloods fan. She wants to keep that legacy alive, as well.”

What We Know About Sean from ‘Blue Bloods’

Fans will recall that Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan had two sons — Jack and Sean, who, in Blue Bloods, were played by real-life brothers, Tony and Andrew Terraciano, respectively. Jack’s tenure on the show was a short one, as he left for college in Season 9, but the series stuck with Sean and followed him through high school. The last time we laid eyes on him was at the family dinner table during the flagship’s series finale when he was preparing to ship off to college.
