While some characters have left for good, like Talia Bishop (Afton Williamson), Oscar comes and goes fairly frequently. Oscar plays an important role in The Rookie season 3, episode 8, “Bad Blood,” when Nolan is working on a kidnapping case. Oscar finds his daughter Ashley (Molly C. Quinn) and learns she’s a suspect. This storyline sheds some light on who Oscar is and is a harsh reminder that no matter how charming he might be, he’s a criminal who has been an absent father. As Ashley says, “You are the worst father ever.” Nolan calls him “the worst person ever” in season 5, episode 12, “Death Notice,” which is a reference to that moment. It’s also a hilarious scene since despite his happy-go-lucky personality, Nolan can’t help his desire to insult Oscar and get out his frustration.
Oscar Hutchinson Is A Unique The Rookie Villain

While some procedurals have dull characters who are completely good or evil with no complexity or development, The Rookie has some layered villains. Similar to Seth Ridley (Patrick Keleher), who came back in a recent episode, Oscar Hutchinson inspires some strong feelings. Since Oscar assists the LAPD officers sometimes, it’s easy to forget that he has hurt people. His scenes are infused with humor since Nolan can’t stand him and knows he’s up to no good, but he can’t deny that, at times, Oscar has helped crack some cases.
The Rookie season 7 has focused on familiar faces, and after Malvado (Jimmy Gonzalez) came back in “Mad About Murder,” it seemed like only a matter of time before Oscar would show his face again. In an interview with Us Weekly, Mekia Cox, who plays Nyla Harper, talked about Oscar and said:
“It’s fun. I feel like anytime Oscar’s on screen, it’s a lot of fun.”
A few months ago, Nathan Fillion was interviewed by TV Insider’s Booked: The Rookie Aftershow and reminded fans that Oscar was put in prison for his violent crimes. Fillion said:
“And of course Matthew Glave who’s going to come in and play Oscar; he’s been around since Season 2. He’ll charm you. He will entertain you. He seems so funny and harmless, but do not turn your back lest he stab you literally. He will be back.”
