The Big Bang Theory’s Laurie Metcalf wants to share the screen with her real-life daughter and Young Sheldon’s iteration of Mary, Zoe Perry.
Laurie Metcalf, who played Mary in The Big Bang Theory, expresses her interest in sharing the screen with Zoe Perry, her real-life daughter and Young Sheldon‘s version of the character. Long before Perry stepped into the shoes of Sheldon’s mother, the Cooper matriarch was first popularized by Metcalf in The Big Bang Theory. While the veteran actor was never a series regular in the nerd-centric sitcom, she was one, if not its most prominent guest stars.
With Young Sheldon season 7 slowly crawling towards its end, Metcalf shares an idea about potentially sharing the screen with Perry in a new interview with Collider. Interestingly, however, the actor doesn’t just want a simple Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory crossover scene. She wants the sequence to highlight whose Mary Cooper is better. Read her full quote below:
I would definitely—I did play with Zoe one time. Maybe we should have a Mary Cooper face-off, and people could [vote] who’s the better Mary Cooper.
Laurie Metcalf currently plays Jackie in The Conners on ABC.
Will Metcalf’s Mary Appear In The Young Sheldon Finale?
Young Sheldon Finale Will Feature Jim Parsons As Adult Sheldon
CBS has already announced that Jim Parsons will appear as adult Sheldon in the Young Sheldon series finale. He will be joined by Mayim Bialik, who played Amy in The Big Bang Theory. It’s uncertain how the writers will make this cameo possible, considering that both exist in an entirely different timeframe than Young Sheldon. That being said, this paves the way for Metcalf to also return as Mary — a role that she hasn’t revisited since The Big Bang Theory season 11, during Sheldon and Amy’s wedding. Perhaps the older Mary’s appearance could shed light on George’s death in Young Sheldon.
If theories are correct that adult Sheldon is working on his autobiography, hence why he is narrating the events of his childhood, then it’s possible that any kind of flash-forward can feature Metcalf. As great as the Young Sheldon finale doubling as a The Big Bang Theory reunion is, the writers will likely prioritize the characters in the prequel when it comes to Easter eggs and special surprises. This was the reason why none of the Coopers appeared in The Big Bang Theory finale, even when Sheldon won the Nobel Prize in Physics.
With only a handful of episodes left before Young Sheldon‘s finale, viewers won’t have to wait long before finding out. The show has been focused on wrapping up Sheldon’s time in Texas and laying the groundwork for his life in California. Metcalf still has a chance to make her Mary Cooper face-off dreams come true in the upcoming Georgie and Mandy spinoff, which is essentially Young Sheldon‘s sequel series, just with fewer Coopers.
