Beth and Rip’s “Yellowstone” spinoff just got a little bigger. Academy Award–nominated actor Ed Harris has officially joined the cast of the new Paramount+ series, which will follow Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler. With Harris stepping in alongside returning fan favorites, the project is shaping up to be one of the most exciting chapters yet in Taylor Sheridan’s hit franchise.
Ed Harris Joins Beth and Rip’s ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff
Harris will play Everett McKinney, a “weathered veteran and veterinarian who treats animals with compassion and understanding and has a good sense of humor,” according to the official logline.
He joins Reilly and Hauser, who reprise their beloved roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, as well as Finn Little as Carter and Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson.
The spinoff’s description, per Variety, teases high stakes for Beth and Rip as they work to protect their 7,000-acre ranch while raising Carter to “become the man he’s supposed to be.” Bening’s character is described as the formidable head of a major Texas ranch, setting up what’s sure to be a dramatic rivalry.
While reports previously referred to the series as “The Dutton Ranch,” Hauser recently told Fox News that the title is not finalized. “Well, first of all, it’s not ‘Dutton Ranch.’ That’s not the name of it,” he clarified, though he promised fans the show will carry the same spirit as the flagship series. “Kelly and I [are] going and working our (expletive) off trying to create something special.”
“Yellowstone” Franchise Makes History With New Settin
In addition to its star power, the Beth and Rip spinoff will mark a historic shift for the “Yellowstone” franchise. Collider reports that filming is taking place in Ferris, Texas, about 20 miles south of Dallas, making it the first time a series in the universe has not been filmed, at least partially, in Montana.
The project, filming under the working title “Rio Palo,” comes from showrunner Chad Feehan, who also helmed “Lawman: Bass Reeves.” Executive producers include Sheridan, Reilly, Hauser, David C. Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, Christina Voros, and Keith Cox, among others.
Even though the original series concluded earlier this year, the Dutton legacy continues to branch out. Luke Grimes will reprise his role as Kayce Dutton in a new CBS drama, while Reilly and Hauser lead Paramount+’s high-profile spinoff.
