Benny Severide Continues To Sabotage Kelly’s Life In Chicago Fire Season 13, 6 Years After His Death
It’s no secret that Kelly Severide didn’t have the best relationship with his father, Benny, in Chicago Fire, but one would think Benny would stop haunting Severide’s life after his death. Unfortunately, for Severide, someone showed up at Firehouse 51 during season 12 who makes it impossible for Benny to quit sabotaging him — Jack Damon, Benny’s son and Severide’s half-brother. Damon is the brother who Severide never thought he had. While exciting at first, Damon is proving to be more of a nuisance for Severide in Chicago Fire season 13 than an asset and confidant.
Benny, played by Treat Williams, died in Chicago Fire season 7, episode 6, “All the Proof,” which aired in October 2018. However, Williams’ last appearance was in episode 5, “A Volatile Mixture.” During episode 6, Severide and Damon’s father suffered a stroke and died. Despite Benny’s absence from the NBC procedural drama TV show, Severide can’t seem to shake his father and his past, as seen in Chicago Fire season 13, episode 2, “Ride the Blade.”
Damon Creates Problems For Severide In Chicago Fire Season 13
Severide’s Brother Disobeys Orders
After learning that Damon is his half-brother in the Chicago Fire season 12 finale, Severide has taken the younger firefighter under his wing. It’s clear that Severide wants to get to know Damon and develop a relationship with him. He is also very protective of Damon, even lying to his wife, Stella Kidd, to cover for his brother during Chicago Fire season 13, episode 2.
Since Damon is a part of Kidd’s Truck 81 crew, she is his boss, not Severide (who leads Rescue Squad 3). So, when Damon disobeys Kidd’s orders while on a call, she is more than ready to punish him for being reckless and not listening to her. Damon claims that he couldn’t hear Kidd (his sister-in-law), but Severide knows that is a lie because he was standing near his brother and could hear Kidd fine. Nevertheless, Kidd lets his rash behavior slide. Severide, on the other hand, is conflicted about whether to be honest with his wife or to protect his brother.
If Kidd writes Damon up, he could get transferred to another station, and it will be on his record forever. While first covering for Damon, Severide later tells Stella the truth about what happened during the fire call in episode 2. Kidd is upset, of course, but the real shocker comes at the end of the hour when Severide tells Damon the two of them can’t work at the same firehouse. Severide is fed up with having to choose between his brother and his wife. Perhaps Michael Bradway’s time on the Chicago Fire season 13 cast is coming to an end.
Benny Severide’s Upbringing Of Damon Explains His Behavior In Chicago Fire
Benny Was Abusive
Given Benny’s past behavior, it makes sense why Damon is so impulsive and quick-tempered in Chicago Fire season 13. Benny was a constant pain in the side for Severide, even though their relationship got a little better before the older man’s death. Benny wasn’t exactly an ideal father or role model, as he never stayed with one woman for too long before leaving her (and sometimes their child, like Severide) behind. Damon even revealed that Benny was abusive towards him during his childhood. As a result, Damon’s recklessness and need to impress his brother is getting him into some trouble at Firehouse 51.
Damon strived to be like his brother and was looking for a male role model in his life, and all the while Severide didn’t know who he was.
To deal with his father’s behavior, Damon grew up idolizing Severide (despite not actually knowing him). Damon strived to be like his brother and was looking for a male role model in his life, and all the while Severide didn’t know who he was. Flash forward many years later, Damon and Severide are working at the same station and developing a relationship.
Consequently, Damon is territorial over Severide and desperately wants to impress him, which is why he didn’t listen to Kidd so that he could be the hero. While Severide and Damon should form a bond, their relationship is getting in the way of their work (and Severide and Kidd’s marriage), meaning something has to change in season 13. Seemingly, one Chicago Fire character must go.
Can Damon & Kelly Still Continue To Work Together In Chicago Fire Season 13?
One Brother Will Likely Leave Firehouse 51
Severide makes up his mind by the end of Chicago Fire season 13, episode 2 — he can no longer work alongside Damon. It hasn’t been very long since he learned that they were related. However, Severide has been constantly put in the middle of contentious situations between his brother and wife, and that needs to stop. Based on episode 3’s preview, Severide’s decision will come to fruition.
Chicago Fire’s Chief Dom Pascal tells someone that he is dismissing them from Firehouse 51. It’s unlikely that Severide will leave, given his tenure at the station. So, Damon may be the one leaving in Chicago Fire season 13, despite the fact that he’s a new character that has ties to others at Firehouse 51 (Severide and Lizzie Novak, who he has a crush on).
