Behind the Scenes of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe—What We Know So Far

The new Big Bang Theory spin-off just got its biggest update yet, as it has been confirmed that Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is officially in production. The new spin-off was announced back in 2023, but major details about the show were only released in the last few months. A potential release date has not yet been revealed. But, we now have our first look at the series thanks to one of its stars. The premise of the new series was revealed just last week, and Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) will lead the show alongside his former fellow TBBT supporting stars, Lauren Lapkus (Denise), Brian Posehn (Bert), and John Ross Bowie (Barry).

Thanks to John Ross Bowie, The Big Bang Theory fans have their first look at the new sitcom, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. “And so it begins…” the actor wrote in a new Instagram post. Bowie shared three photos from the behind-the-scenes of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, including two with the officially announced cast standing together. The final photo revealed that the series is currently going through table reads ahead of shooting.

While the photos didn’t reveal much directly, the fact that SFTSTU is going through table reads means the first draft of at least most of the episodes will have been written. More excitingly, the table reading room will be filled with most of, if not the entire cast for the show, meaning the remainder of the roles will have been cast. Fans are hoping that some of the original The Big Bang Theory stars will be in the room to reprize their roles in the new spin-off, although nothing has been confirmed yet.

What Is ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ About?

Unfortunately, the new sitcom’s title is all fans have to go off regarding the plot of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. With the finalized scripts still in development, we’re expecting to be waiting at least a few more weeks or months before any plot details are revealed by CBS. Although nothing is set in stone, there are some things we can work out based on the title and the cast.

Most apparent is that Stuart will lead the new show. By the end of The Big Bang Theory, the comic bookshop owner was just starting to get his life together. After spending 11 seasons alone and being the butt of many jokes, Stuart found a girlfriend in Season 12, although he was still the butt of many jokes. Denise’s confirmation for the new series suggests that they are still together (at least in the first episode).

Fans are struggling to connect the dots between Stuart and Denise, and Bert and Barry. In The Big Bang Theory, the latter pair both worked at the same university as Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj. But, neither of them showed any vested interest in comic books or anything similarly geeky. It will be interesting to see how the four characters come together in the new spin-off.
