Cameras are rolling in Massachusetts’ capital city where Donnie Wahlberg, Sonequa Martin-Green, and the rest of the cast of Boston Blue are continuing the legacy that Blue Bloods left behind. The upcoming production, which debuts on CBS as part of the network’s fall lineup, is one eagerly awaited by audiences — especially those who were beyond bummed to see the flagship series come to an end back in December 2024. Recently, the duo at the center of the procedural sat down in front of cameras to tease what is awaiting audiences in just two short months, with Wahlberg and Martin-Green pulling back the curtain and giving an insider look into the making of Boston Blue’s first season.
We already knew that Wahlberg’s Detective Danny Reagan would be moving his hustling, bustling, and well-established life in New York City behind to strike out on his own in Boston Blue, but his on-camera chat with Martin-Green gives us more insight into the newly appointed partners’ dynamic. Together, the actors address questions like what their first impressions of one another were like and what they share in common with their characters. The pair also open up about the storyline that runs through Boston Blue and how it’s incredibly similar to what folks saw before in Blue Bloods (hint: family ties), but also commits to being its own thing.
‘Boston Blue’ Won’t Forget the Family That Started It All
Yes, there will be plenty of new characters to meet in Boston Blue, with Martin-Green and Wahlberg joined by a slew of fresh to the story faces, including Ernie Hudson (the Ghostbusters franchise), Maggie Lawson (Psych), Gloria Reuben (ER), and Marcus Scribner (Grown-ish) joining the fold. Meanwhile, the powers that be decided to recast Danny’s son, Sean, with Mika Amonsen taking over the part first played by Andrew Terraciano in the original series. Sean will be Danny’s direct connection to the family that he left behind in the Empire State, but Wahlberg has teased that cameos are already in the works. For starters, Bridget Moynahan is slated to reprise her role as Danny’s younger sister, Erin Reagan, in the pilot, which certainly opens the door for potential cameo appearances in the future.
Previously teasing those unwavering ties to his character’s family, Wahlberg said:
“He has his own family, too. It’s not just his dad and his brother and sister. He has sons, and he has responsibilities to them as well. I’ll just say the journey of developing this show, it’s really fun letting Danny be a fish out of water to be in this new world. It’s also important to remember where he comes from and what the Blue Bloods legacy is. We’re keeping all of that at the forefront of our thoughts as we build this thing.”
