On the heels of an untimely cancellation, an ending had to be crafted for the season finale of FBI: Most Wanted. The last we saw of the team had Remy Scott (Dylan McDermott) headed for retirement and Barnes (Roxy Sternberg) taking up the reins and taking over the Fugitive Task Force. Most Wanted wasn’t the only drama in the Dick WolfFBI universe to get shelved recently. Fellow FBI offshoot, FBI: International, also saw its run terminated unexpectedly. However, there is another spin-off to look forward to. CIA, being set in New York, will see the return of Most Wanted showrunner David Hudgins, returning to the same job role. So, does that open up the door for some members of the Fugitive Task Force’s story to continue in CIA?
The new series will star Tom Ellis (Lucifer) as a charismatic, rule-breaking CIA case officer, Hart Hoxton, and given that both shows are set in New York, it makes sense for some cameos to occur. However, while speaking with TV Insider, Hudgins confirmed that we shouldn’t expect to see any of the FBI: Most Wanted characters on the new CIA series. Hudgins’ comments also do not suggest that there might be any crossover events with the flagship series, FBI, despite both shows running concurrently on Monday nights. Hudgins’ comments read, “CIA is its own show, although it does exist in the universe of the mother ship FBI.”
While there is no suggestion that we might be seein any members of the Fugitive Task Force joining the CIA-FBI team at the moment. It’s not a possibility that one should completely rule out. Ellis’ CIA is likely trying to be able to stand on its own two feet, and a consistent reliance on cameos from other shows within the franchise won’t help achieve that. The dynamic of the new show is likely to be another factor preventing an early cameo.
‘CIA’ Will Be Built On An Unlikely Partnership
Ellis’ Hoxton is set to partner up with a rule-following veteran officer, and the unlikely team will have to find a way to work together to get the criminal elements off the streets. While we might ultimately see some familiar faces from across the franchise dropping by overtime. This unlikely union and the tension they are sure to generate is what CIA is likely to be built on. “The dynamic between these two is what I hope will be the hook of the show. A-stories and ‘crimes of the week’ are always crucial but with CIA, we have this added layer of relationship between our two main ‘odd-couple’ characters,” Hudgins said in a previous interview, adding, “I think people will want to tune in to see what’s going to happen next with these two, because there will be many ups and downs. CIA is its own show, although it does exist in the universe of the mother ship FBI.“
