Production is expected to begin in July.
It’s official, the next chapter of the Yellowstone saga is coming to the Lone Star State. 1923, the prequel to Yellowstone from Paramount+, is expected to start production in Austin this July, pumping in millions of dollars into the Texas capital, according to documents from Austin EDC.
1923 follows Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, the heads of the massive Yellowstone Ranch in Montana. The show premiered in December 2022 but has been on hiatus since February 2023. Will season 2 have scenes set in Texas or will Austin be used as a stand-in for other locations? We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s coming.
For context, Yellowstone and its first prequel 1883 have both filmed scenes in Texas.
The Austin EDC documents show that 1923 is expected to start filming in July and wrap in September. The show will reportedly spend $15 million on local wages, $23 million for “local non-wage expenditures,” use 26,000 “room night stays,” and hire 200 combined cast and crew members local to Austin. Season 2 is working on a $150+ million budget and will have an estimated economic impact of $51,861,641 for the city.
Austin City Council will vote on Thursday, May 30, to return 0.5% of the total local wages paid by King Street Productions as part of the Creative Content Incentive Program Agreement. Made in an effort to grow Austin’s film presence, the agreement, if approved, would approve up to $82,500 to King Street Productions for its economic impact.
“This is a tremendous announcement and I want to thank the City’s leaders for their work in bringing this project to Austin,” Austin Chamber of Commerce CEO Jeremy Martin wrote in a statement to MySA. “We strongly support projects that bring more jobs to our city, add to our creative and film industries, and provide a positive return to taxpayers.”
MySA reached out to Paramount+ and Austin Film Society for comment on the potential impact of 1923 coming to Austin.
