The season 2 finale shows Will and Angie seemingly getting back together and doing well even as they investigate the murders of sex offenders. This leaves Angie once again reflecting on how she witnessed teenage Crystal kill their abuser, Lenny Broussard, which Angie took the blame for, claiming it was self-defense.
Between the two stories, the audience sees Angie discover that Crystal is a serial killer, thinking she is ridding the world of monsters. She runs away from Angie and ends up tripping, hitting her head on a rock and dying.
Angie tells the others what happened but does not reveal that Crystal killed Lenny. However, keeping things a secret from Will Trent is in vain as he eventually finds out the truth. Crystal’s mother also finds out and threatens to sue the entire Atlanta Police Department. After briefly imagining a future where he stays quiet and he and Angie have a great life together, Will returns to reality to arrest Angie for tampering with evidence and witness tampering.
The final scene shows Angie heading to prison while Will has packed up and left town with Amanda sitting in his empty house. It’s a crazy twist, so what will happen to Angie next season? Here’s what we know!
Showrunners Will Trent Reveal Angie’s Future in Season 3 Speaking to TVLine, showrunners Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen detailed how they always planned for Angie to cover up Lenny’s death and react to it. Thomsen also added that this will challenge Angie’s newfound sanity.
“You should definitely be worried. Ever since the first episode, when we were flirting with the idea of Angie having to wear a fentanyl patch as part of her case, and whether that would make her give up, we spent a lot of time [in the writers’ room] debating when and if she should fall. What we decided was that we didn’t want to just use it as a cheap plot twist. We were always challenging ourselves to come up with a bigger, better, more horrifying reason for her to fall, and I think this ending is going to give her a pretty big reason.”
Obviously, season 3 will be based around Angie going to trial and the obvious risk of being a cop in prison. Whether Angie will go to trial or not is up in the air, as the showrunners want to explore how the justice system treats cops differently. However, her future as a cop is clearly in doubt, and it’s unclear whether she’ll accept Amanda’s offer to join the GBI. Thomsen hinted that there are plenty of ways to do that.
“We’ve talked about it, and we’ve talked about a way back. Everything’s on the table. We have to look at the ecosystem of the show. But we’re big, big, big fans of Erika Christensen here. I love watching her, and I’ll personally follow [Angie] wherever she goes.”
