‘Andor’ and ‘House of Cards’ Writer Beau Willimon to Co-Write Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Movie with James Mangold
Star Wars fans can certainly enjoy their day, as a couple of important news regarding the franchise have been released. We have already reported on The Mandalorian & Grogu getting an official release date, but that is not the only piece of news we have for you today. Namely, it has been officially confirmed that Oscar- and Emmy-nominated writer Beau Willimon will be co-writing the upcoming Star Wars movie with director James Mangold.
Beau Willimon became famous for his work on The Ides of March and House of Cards before ultimately working on the first season of the acclaimed series Andor. He will now be joining Mangold, who is directing the movie, for an epic new movie, replacing former writer David S. Goyer, who was initially attached to the movie.
While not much is known about this project, Disney seems to be going forward with it, and with Willimon and Mangold teaming up, we can look forward to an interesting and somewhat gritty story. This will be Mangold’s first Star Wars project, but the director already has two Academy Award nominations, one for the epic comic book movie Logan (Best Adapted Screenplay) and the other for the sports drama Ford v Ferrari (Best Director). Knowing his style, the upcoming Star Wars project should be an epic experience.
So, what do we know about the movie? The movie currently doesn’t have an official title, but some Hollywood outlets have reported that it will be titled Dawn of the Jedi. The movie will, indeed, explore the early days of the Jedi Order and will be set around the year 25,000 BBY, so it is unclear whether the title is real at this moment or whether it is just a conjecture based on what is known about the movie’s setting and plot outline. Mangold himself commented on the concept he had envisioned for the movie:
“I thought about a biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments and the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from? When did we discover it? When did we know how to use it? And a story just started developing.“
The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur are certainly going to be major inspirations for the movie, as has been confirmed, as Mangold is going to dig deep into the history of the Jedi Order and, hopefully, deliver an amazing story. Mangold was initially set to direct a Sergio Leone-style movie about Boba Fett, which later became the series The Book of Boba Fett, with Mangold taking on the current project. As said, Goyer was initially set to write the movie, but it has since been confirmed that Mangold and Willimon will be writing the movie.
This is all we have as of the time of writing, but be sure to keep following us for more updates on the project.
