All the Details on ‘Virgin River’ Season 6—Including the Cast, Release Date & More
December couldn’t get here fast enough
It has already been over a year since Virgin River fans last caught up with Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson)—and it’s been even longer since Netflix revealed that season six is confirmed. Fortunately for all of us, we won’t have to wait much longer before we revisit the charming small town and, most importantly, get some answers to our long-awaited questions.
Will Mel and Jack finally become parents? What’s the deal with Mel’s biological dad? And who is the real father of Charmaine’s (Lauren Hammersley) twins? I unfortunately don’t have those answers, but I’ve researched quite a few details, from the cast to the release date. Keep reading for the latest updates on Virgin River season six.
1. When Did Virgin River Get Renewed for Season 6?
On May 17, 2023, several weeks ahead of season five’s premiere in September, Netflix announced that Virgin River is officially returning for a sixth season.
The show’s renewal came as no surprise, since Jinny Howe (Netflix’s Head Of Drama and Development) hinted that the story would continue beyond season five. She told Deadline, “I think we definitely see more longevity and growth with the show. As long as the audience asks for it and shows up—and I think we see with season four that the fandom is very strong and growing in many places as well—it feels like based on what we’re seeing with season four and the anticipation for season five that there is a lot more storytelling to offer us.”
2. What Is Virgin River Season 6 About?
Netflix hasn’t revealed specific details about the plot for season six, but showrunner Patrick Sean Smith teased what fans can expect. He told Netflix’s Tudum, “Mel and Jack will advance on their path to parenthood while also turning Lilly’s (Lynda Boyd) farm into their ultimate dream home. Babies and wedding bells are never off the table on Virgin River.”
Smith also revealed that season six will take place a few months after the Christmas-themed episodes in season five, adding that it’ll be “deeper into springtime.” And as for the plot, writer and producer Richard Keith told Tudum in 2022, “Yes, the characters do go through some pretty terrible things, but there’s always a happy ending. It may not be the happy ending they were expecting, but they find their way to a happy place that, in some ways, might be happier than if they’d ended up where they thought they would to begin with.”
3. When Did Virgin River Season 6 Start Filming?
Production for season six began in February 2024, and the cast marked the occasion with some exciting updates on Instagram. Henderson shared a behind-the-scenes snap of himself and Breckenridge and wrote, “Aaaaaannnnnnndddddd……we’re back! Back at it in Vancouver commencing shooting for season 6 of #virginriver that’s right folks we are at it again! Feels so good to be back in Jack’s boots making more what we hope to be riveting, romantic and racy drama for y’all. Stay tuned for more updates on set life and BTS banter.”
Filming concluded in June 2024, and towards the end, Henderson posted a pic from his makeup trailer. He wrote, “Been a huge season with a lot of what I hope makes you fans very happy.”
4. Who Is in the Cast of Virgin River Season 6?
According to Netflix, the main cast, including Henderson, Breckenridge, Tim Matheson, Annette O’Toole, Colin Lawrence, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Zibby Allen, Sarah Dugdale, Marco Grazzini, Mark Ghanimé, Kai Bradbury and Kandyse McClure will return.
As for the newcomers, Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr, who you may recognize from One Piece, are joining the cast as the younger version of Mel’s parents, Sarah and Everett.
5. Is There a Trailer For Virgin River Season 6?
Although production has officially wrapped, Netflix has yet to release the official trailer for Virgin River season six. However, they did offer a few first look photos on Instagram, including a shot of Mel and Jack and a solo pic of Dan looking….well, not pleased.
6. When Is the Season 6 Release Date?
Ready your calendars, because new episodes are arriving just in time for Christmas. Netflix announced on social media that Virgin River will be back in December.
