Ellis is billed to play a CIA case officer named Hart Hoxton in what will be CBS’ newest entry in its FBI procedural universe. The network has revealed the one-hour drama will feature Ellis as a “fast-talking, rule-breaking loose cannon” CIA officer, partnered with a by-the-book FBI agent at the New York station. The series, like other shows in the franchise, is executive-produced by Dick Wolf and is slated to premiere in the upcoming TV season. Anticipation and expectations for the series, which seems to be a strategic move to replace the recently cancelled FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted, are running high with fans curious for more details.
Ellis remains the only cast member named for the series so far, and with casting still ongoing, more names should be unveiled soon. Garcia seems open to the idea of appearing in the series, and when asked by ScreenRant if she’d contacted Ellis about it, she said:
“I have not yet. I’ve more hit him up to golf because he’s the best golfer I know. And I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m going to a charity golf tournament in Chicago. Can we practice?’ And he’s like, ‘Oh, I’m out of town.’ So I do check in with him every three months to see how the family’s doing and whatnot. But you know what? You’ve given me a good idea. [laughing] Sometimes great ideas start on Zooms.”
What Can We Expect From ‘CIA’?
Following the cancellation of FBI International, and fellow franchise off-shoot, FBI Most Wanted, fans of the FBI universe will have their attention solely fixed on the upcoming spin-off CIA, as well as the flagship series, which wasn’t canceled. Unlike its FBI-branded predecessors, there is a conscious effort to develop CIA as a fully stand-alone series, signaling CBS’ intent to break from the crossover-heavy formula that defined previous spin-offs.
Showrunner and executive producer David Hudgins has already hinted at a slight departure from the regular procedural structure to a plot more focused on the dynamics between the two main “odd-couple” characters, admitting that the new show will feature “a very different style of storytelling”. The goal seems to be to chart a new course for the franchise that doesn’t necessarily rely on legacy characters but builds a new one with star power like Tom Ellis.
