Ahsoka’s Big Cameo Was Great – But It Could Start A Risky Trend

Ahsoka used the World Between Worlds to bring back a fan-favorite character, but the narrative tool cannot be overused in future outings.

The Star Wars universe became a little more complicated with the debut of the World Between Worlds in Star Wars:Rebels. While there’s still a lot that audiences have to learn about this strange dimension, what is clear is that it opens portals to different periods from across the Star Wars timeline. It aided Ahsoka during Rebels in escaping the dangerous wrath of Darth Vader and was used again in Disney+’s Ahsoka to reunite the student with the master. The World Between Worlds is deeply linked to the Force, and while its mysterious nature will always be protected, it’s plausible that audiences will see it many more times.

However, there is such a thing as too much of a good narrative, and using the time travel tool of the World Between Worlds could be damaging long-term for the Star Wars universe. It certainly brings with it many benefits, and there are dream scenarios that may occur thanks to this integral storytelling technique. However, if LucasFilm’s creative team taps into this well too many times, then it will become far less effective. The World Between Worlds might thus be a really exciting development in the galaxy far, far away, but it has to be defended at all costs.

Ahsoka Made Fans Wait For Its Biggest Reunion – But It Was Worth It

Ahsoka used the World Between Worlds rather unexpectedly in live-action for the first time. The character already had a connection to this strange realm after Ezra Bridger interacted with her via the plane of existence. However, it’s unclear how Ahsoka fell into the World Between Worlds this time, but what was surprising was how the show utilized the location. The location formed a bridge with Ahsoka’s past, allowing her Master, Anakin, to return to her.

It provided a vital learning moment for Ahsoka Tano, who had to reconnect with her past as a Jedi Padawan. While Anakin switched between his time as a Knight and as Lord Vader throughout the appearance, it was clear that the World Between Worlds offered the opportunity for anyone to make a comeback. Indeed, it might have narratively made sense for Ahsoka to go on this journey, but from a fan’s perspective, Ahsoka gave audiences a live-action battle between the Padawan and Master for the first time. The moment really delivered on the hype while moving Ahsoka’s arc forward after fans were treated to familiar events from the Jedi’s time in the Clone Wars.

The way that Ahsoka used the World Between Worlds indicates that anyone could make a comeback via this unusual route. Audiences have already seen the likes of the Emperor and Anakin Skywalker travel through this location, and there’s no telling who could show up next. It, therefore, provides a massive opportunity to save characters from their fates and perhaps bring them into completely different time periods. The limitations of the World Between Worlds are seemingly unlimited. Perhaps figures like Asajj Ventress could return, Rey could communicate with Jedi past like Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the High Republic could be linked up to the New Republic. Ahsoka revealed much more about the World Between Worlds, but now its future is uncertain.

Audiences will be clamoring for dream battle scenarios most of all, with Ahsoka starting a risky trend. Seeing Ahsoka and Anakin pitted against one another in this format prompts the question, why can’t there be other showdowns set within this Force dimension? Darth Maul and Din Djarin, Count Dooku and Luke Skywalker, Yoda and Kylo Ren. There are countless combat combinations that might not make a lot of narrative sense but would be thrilling to see unfold. The World Between Worlds could become the ultimate way of delivering fan service, with the creation of narratives that simply weren’t possible when following the conventional chronology of the Star Wars releases. But when these ideas start getting discussed, it’s hard to see where the stopping point should be. It would be very easy to get carried away, damaging the structure of the Star Wars timeline.

Perhaps the World Between Worlds will appear in the second season of Ahsoka, prompting the return of further characters like Captain Rex, the High Inquisitor, or Barriss Offee. But the more the location is used for this fan service, the cheaper the tool will be.
