After 5 release date, trailer and more about After Everything

After Everything has finally arrived to tell the “final chapter” of Tessa and Hardin’s dramatic love story.

The fifth movie in the popular After series, adapted from Anna Todd’s book series, picks up on the surprise cliffhanger ending to After Ever Happy which confirmed we were getting a surprise extra movie.

So even though After Everything is now seemingly the final movie in the series, at least we’ve had one extra movie with Tessa and Hardin. (We’re still waiting to hear if the planned prequel and sequel movies are happening.)

With the movie now hitting cinemas, here’s everything you need to know about After Everything.

After 5 release date: When can we expect After Everything?
As mentioned above, After Everything’s US release date has arrived with the movie receiving a special two-night-only event in US cinemas on September 13 and 14.

Like with the other movies in the series, After Everything will come to Netflix in the US, but you’ll be waiting a little while. After Ever Happy was released in September 2022 and landed on Netflix US on Christmas Day 2022.

In the UK, After fans have to wait until October 3 for the final movie to arrive on Prime Video, but at least you’ll then be able to rewatch it again and again.

After 5 runtime: How long is After Everything?
Ahead of its US release, After Everything was confirmed to have a runtime of 95 minutes or one hour and 35 minutes if you prefer.

That makes it the shortest movie in the After series to date.

After 5 trailer: Watch the After Everything trailers here!
The first teaser for After Everything was released in December 2022, but the brief footage was focused on Hardin without Tessa in sight.

We see Hardin talking to his parents and struggling to move on from Tessa as he sets about writing his next book. “I keep on trying to write and every time I do, everything just ends up going back to Tessa,” he admits.

His parents’ advice is to get some distance to make peace with their relationship being over, so we see Hardin book a flight to Lisbon. What’s the betting he runs right into Tessa there? Watch the teaser below if you haven’t seen it yet:

The full trailer for After Everything arrived on May 1 and showed more of Hardin’s trip to Lisbon – where, it seems, he’ll end up running into Tessa.

He also meets up with Natalie (played by Sex Education star Mimi Keene) who, it seems, is the same Natalie referred to in the books as Hardin’s previous partner who he humiliated by filming them having sex without her consent.

Maybe Hardin will learn the error of his ways this time?

After 5 plot: How does After Ever Happy ending set up After Everything?
We’re about to go into some spoilers for After Ever Happy, so look away now if you haven’t seen the movie yet.

Unlike the book it’s based on (which ends with a flash-forward where Tessa and Hardin have two children), the fourth movie ends on a bleaker note as Tessa and Hardin aren’t together.

Their final break-up comes when Tessa finds the book that Hardin has been writing, called After, about their relationship. She doesn’t want her life published for everyone to read, but he tells her it’s too late as it’s being released.

Tessa says it’s finally over for them, but she still can’t stop herself from dropping into a reading of Hardin’s book. She leaves after she sees Hardin looking at another woman. He spots Tessa just as she’s leaving, but continues with his reading and the last shot we see is of Tessa walking off into the rain.

Has Hardin moved on with somebody else? A fan theory argues that maybe this random woman is just pretending to be Tessa, a marketing ploy from Hardin if you will.

The fifth movie will pick up from this open ending and we imagine it’ll see Tessa and Hardin get back together (eventually), building up to the finale of the book where they live happily ever after.

In the book, there are multiple time jumps to tell the end of Tessa and Hardin’s story, so there’s plenty of scope for the fifth movie to fill in the gaps and give us plenty more drama on its way to a happy ending.

Before the surprise announcement of the fifth movie, we knew that director Castille Landon was working on two more After movies. One was set to be based on the Hardin-focused prequel Before and the other was to be centred on their children.

“Emery, Auden, and Addy are quite beloved by the fans. We’ve all gotten a lot of inquiries about what happens with the kids,” Landon told Teen Vogue.

“It’s really amazing actually to see how interested the fanbase is in those characters, even though they are really only superficially introduced in the books. People have latched onto them because of their love for Hardin and Tessa.”

“It’s really amazing actually to see how interested the fanbase is in those characters, even though they are really only superficially introduced in the books. People have latched onto them because of their love for Hardin and Tessa.”

We don’t yet know if either of those movies are still happening as a result of the unexpected extra After movie.

It’s possible that the fifth After film replaced one of those planned movies, but there’s been no confirmation either way yet.

After 5 cast: Who’s coming back for After Everything?
Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin will be back as Tessa Young and Hardin Scott, respectively, as it wouldn’t be an After movie without them.

However, it’s been rumoured that Tessa will have a reduced role in After Everything with fans speculating that her scenes in the trailer were filmed for After Ever Happy, and recycled for the new movie.

The teaser confirmed that Louise Lombard and Stephen Moyer were back as Hardin’s parents Trish Daniels and Christian Vance, and the full trailer added some additional names for the finale.

As mentioned above, Sex Education star Mimi Keene is playing Hardin’s former partner Natalie, but she’s not the only newcomer, as Benjamin Mascolo is playing Sebastian and Aya Ivanova is playing Emery.

The likes of Chance Perdomo’s Landon and Kiana Madeira’s Nora (who’s now moved in with Landon) are also back for the final chapter.

After Everything is released in the US on September 13 and in the UK on October 3 on Prime Video.
