The back half of the finale focused on FBI‘s characters trying to track down the terrorist threat, while Jubal did his best to stay strong for his son. Given his injuries and the fact he was knocked into a coma, it was unclear if he would survive. Luckily, he did, avoiding yet another brush with death on the show.
Speaking with ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender, Sisto explained what this tragedy meant for Jubal and his ex-wife, Sam, who was present during Tyler’s brush with death in the FBI midseason finale. Speaking to an essay written by Tyler the pair read together, Sisto said he’s not sure considering the complexities of Jubal’s relationship, but that he thinks they’ll be drawn closer:
ScreenRant: Diving into the midseason finale: Obviously, the midst of the citywide crisis with one’s son in mortal peril is not the time to be talking about reconciliation, but Jubal and Sam have a beautiful moment together reading Tyler’s essay. Do you think this incident will draw them closer together, and can we expect more appearances from her in the back half of the season?
Jeremy Sisto: Yeah, I don’t know. From what I can tell, I think so, but I’m not sure. It’s always surprising to me. It seems to me that he’s not staying on the couch anymore. He still has his wedding ring on, so I think they are giving it a go. I think that it’s working out great for the kids, and they’re really enjoying it.
But with Jubal, and knowing how complicated relationships are in general, there is still stuff that’s not being fully discussed in its entirety. So, I would not be surprised to be surprised about where the relationship actually is later on this season.
Jubal and Sam have always had some level of friction between one another ever since her first appearance in season 1. She’s shown up sporadically since then, with her latest appearance tied to the worry both parents had for their son. This isn’t the first time Tyler’s life has been in danger, either, having battled leukemia back in season 3.
Based on Sisto’s statement, it seems like Jubal and Sam have a shot at getting closer to each other again, especially after Tyler almost died. While their son ends up surviving the midseason finale, the fact the pair almost lost him no doubt puts things in perspective for them about what’s most important in their lives.
While the actor doesn’t pinpoint how the incident could mend the broken bridge between the couple, the fact that FBI season 9 is already confirmed means there’s plenty of time for the show to focus on them. This could include the pair trying again romantically, or at the very least coming together to support their children more readily.
