A Dog’s Heartfelt Letter Brought a Flood of Tears—Then, a Forever Home

It took six years, but Roofus finally got his forever home.

The much-loved Weimaraner mix was given up six years ago to a Florida animal shelter along with a heartbreaking note that remained tucked away in his file until recently.

“My Daddy lost his job a year ago and can’t find a new one,” reads the letter, written in 2010 in the first person. “I will miss my two-legged siblings so much, they keep crying and hugging me, begging mommy and daddy not to take me back to the shelter.”

The Bishop Animal Shelter in Bradenton, Florida, who was caring for the dog up until Saturday, hoped the letter would help Roofus find a home after 794 days there — and on Saturday their wish came true, according to WFLA 8 News, who first reported the story.

“My family is very sad to give me back to Bishop but they know you’ll find me a new family that will love me just as much,” the letter reads. “They’re including my bed and favorite toys. Please find me a good home.”

That good home came after a Florida couple heard about Roofus’s story on the news over the weekend.

“I looked over at my husband when they started talking about Roofus and of course he went, ‘Uh oh,’” said Karen Duffy. “I immediately was in love and ready to have him in the house.”

Duffy and her husband drove two hours from Port Richey on Saturday to adopt Roofus and, in just a few days, it’s already clear the senior pup is adjusting very well to his new home. He now has a yard to play in, a huge bed, and a family that loves him, WFLA reports.

“Thanks for having Roofus on the broadcast,” Duffy said. “I’m the lucky one.”
