A Bones Reunion Is Happening on SEAL Team: ‘It’s Great to Work Together Again’
The creative forces behind the final season of SEAL Team appear to be working hard. The Paramount+ military drama (which has been a smash hit on the streaming service) has high stakes in its final seasons. That’s especially true for Bravo after the surprise reveal that multiple SEALs are dealing with underlying health conditions. Bravo is currently being monitored, and the team now has a new member. Ironically, this casting signals a Bones reunion.
Beau Knapp guest-starred in the Season 8 finale of Bones in 2013, working with David Boreanaz — who also directed the episode. The two are working together again, with Knapp joining SEAL Team as Drew Franklin, who is reluctant to reveal much about his past. The actor spoke to TV Insider about joining the hit Fox show 11 years ago, and how his audition for the military series brought back a lot of memories: It was a trip. It was 2013. It was a wild time. Like 2011, I was 21. I had my first child and I was just a young, hungry actor. That’s all I knew how to do. Super 8 was my first job, the J.J. Abrams movies. And then I’m pretty sure Bones was the second thing I ever did, but going in there, it was wild because David Boreanaz was directing that ending, so I went into the room and read for David across from him. Just like I did with SEAL Team—going into the test was David just sitting across from me. Even though Beau Knapp only appeared in one episode of Bones, it seems like that small role meant a lot to him, because he got it when he was still trying to break into the industry. I imagine it was strange to be directed by David Boreanaz so early in his career and to work with him again years later on another show (and in a more prominent role). Based on his comments, Knapp remains as grateful as ever: It was a great experience, and I think that was one of the first conversations we had when I walked into the room for SEAL Team testing. David and I started talking about 10 years ago or whatever it was, 11, 12 years ago, and it went by so fast, but it was great to work together again. But yeah, even then, it was playing the villain. It was fun. I think that was my first experience with television and how different it was from doing movies. It was crazy to see that. I looked like a kid filming Bones compared to now. I’m so grateful.
The former Death Wish member is an interesting addition to the SEAL Team, as Bravo had a hard time getting to know Drew. As mentioned, Drew isn’t the most outgoing person while also keeping an eye on Bravo-1 because Jason isn’t doing so well in the field.
In the latest episode, “A Perfect Storm,” which can be streamed with a Paramount+ subscription, the team revealed that Drew was in Echo when the team was ambushed in J-bad years ago before he returned to base. That explains his closed-off nature, and now you have to wonder if he might discuss his past more in the future.
I love that this casting marks a reunion for Bones with David Boreanaz, and it would be nice to see another one before the series ends. Of course, the chances of that being the case are slim, since there are only a handful of episodes left, so barring some major surprises, I doubt we’ll see Emily Deschanel pop up at any point. Still, let’s just enjoy the fact that Boreanaz and Beau Knapp got the chance to work together again.
