Although the fifth movie in the After series, After Everything, brings closure to Hardin and Tessa’s romantic storyline, it leaves viewers with one nagging question: will there be an After 6, or was After Everything the end of the movie series? Following its premiere in 2019, the first movie in the After series did not receive positive reviews from critics. However, despite its underwhelming critical ratings, the film performed well enough at the box office to spawn sequels.
With the follow-ups, the romance movie series grew from strength to strength despite stirring controversies with its problematic depiction of a romantic relationship. Owing to its growing popularity, the After movie series has lasted five installments, making it hard not to wonder if it will continue its run with new sequels. It has officially been confirmed that After Everything is the final movie in the After movie series, marking the end of Hardin and Tessa’s torrid romantic journey. Despite being adapted from Anna Todd’s books of the same name, the movies go one installment beyond the original book series that ends with book 4, After Ever Happy. The lack of source material content is likely the primary reason why After Everything is the last movie in the series.
Picking up where the previous installment left, the final film serves as a rite of passage for Hardin. Unlike the previous movies in which he is on a self-destructive path, he sets out to right his wrongs and win Tessa back in the fifth film. Although this pursuit of change is marred with several challenges, he is deadset on finding a final resolution to his relationship with Tessa.
Although the fifth installment in the After movies concludes Tessa and Hardin’s story, a sequel focusing on a new generation of characters is reportedly in the works. The After sequel/spin-off does not have an official title yet but was apparently in pre-production. Its story was set to revolve around Tessa and Hardin’s kids Emery, Auden, and their cousin Addy, who, like their parents, experience the pains and pleasures of growing up in the movie. A prequel based on Anna Todd’s novel, Before, was also concurrently being developed, centering its storyline on Hardin’s teenage years before he met Tessa.
Considering how it has officially been confirmed that After Everything was the last of the movie series, it seems unlikely that After 6 will ever see the light of day. If Anna Todds ends up writing another follow-up to her original After book series, the creators of the movies may consider adapting it and adding another sequel to the franchise. Till then, however, audiences who have followed the franchise all this while can look forward to the After spin-off and the prequel that are reportedly in the works.
