‘He’s Not Dead!’: Samuel L. Jackson Wants to Revive Mace Windu for New Star Wars Series
Samuel L. Jackson is eager to return as Mace Windu in his own Star Wars spinoff series on Disney+.
If Samuel L. Jackson gets his way, Mace Windu will soon be starring in his own Star Wars spinoff series.
Per Empire, Samuel L. Jackson participated in a new interview to reflect on the 25th anniversary of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. The actor memorably played the Jedi Master Mace Windu in the films, and the character was seemingly killed off in Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. While Mace Windu’s chances of survival seemed very slim, Jackson is adamant that the character is still alive, as when asked about the Jedi Master’s death scene, the actor said, “HE’S NOT DEAD!!!” When asked about potentially returning for his own Mace Windu-focused spinoff show, Jackson also responded, “EVERYTHING YES!!”
Samuel L. Jackson’s Mace Windu hasn’t been seen in live-action form since Revenge of the Sith, but the actor has reprised the role in a different way. Jackson voiced an animated version of Mace Windu for the animated Clone Wars movie in 2008. He later had a voice cameo as the Jedi Master in 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Meanwhile, the character’s story is getting further expanded upon with a new comic book series. However, there hasn’t been any indication of a live-action return happening anytime soon.
Jackson previously reflected on how he landed the role of Mace Windu in the Star Wars franchise. In a 2023 interview with Vulture, the actor shared how he named George Lucas as a director he hoped to work with in a television interview, perhaps not thinking that much would come from it. However, it was soon after the interview when he was given a call, informed that Lucas had a role for Jackson in mind to be brought into Star Wars.
“I remember I was on some British talk show and they asked me if there were any directors I wanted to work with I hadn’t worked with. I go, ‘Yeah, George Lucas. I’d love to be in a Star Wars movie,'” Jackson explained. “Then I go off and I’m doing Sphere in Vallejo with Dustin [Hoffman] and Sharon Stone and I get a call. ‘George Lucas would like to meet you. He hears you want to be in his Star Wars movie.'”
It remains to be seen if Jackson will reprise the role. In the meantime, fans can revisit his debut as Mace Windu when Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace returns to theaters on May 3, 2024.
