For Kaley Cuoco, The Big Bang Theory isn’t just a chapter in her career—it’s a highlight of her life. From 2007 to 2019, Cuoco charmed audiences as Penny, the bubbly and lovable neighbor who brought warmth and humor to the iconic CBS sitcom. Now, years after its finale, Cuoco still cherishes the show’s impact on her life and career, and she’s open to stepping back into Penny’s shoes.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Cuoco, now 38, opened up about her time on the show and its lasting significance. “I spent 12 years playing that role, and it really set off my career,” she shared. “I owe a lot to that character, to that show, and to [creator] Chuck Lorre. It was some of the best years of my life, and some of the most fun I’ve ever had.”
A Possible Return as Penny?
When asked if she’d consider reprising her role, Cuoco didn’t hesitate. “I would absolutely reprise that role,” she said enthusiastically. “100%. I love that character, and I always will.”
While no official plans for a Penny-focused revival have been announced, Cuoco’s openness to the idea sparks hope for fans eager to revisit the quirky, science-loving world of The Big Bang Theory.
The original series, which ran for 12 seasons, followed the lives of a group of socially awkward scientists and their interactions with Penny, who brought a refreshing dose of wit and heart. With 10 Emmy wins under its belt, the show remains a cultural phenomenon, available to stream on Max.
The Expanding Big Bang Universe
Even after The Big Bang Theory concluded, its legacy has continued to grow. The prequel series Young Sheldon, which centered on Jim Parsons’ character Sheldon Cooper, premiered in 2017 and wrapped earlier this year.
Another spinoff, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, launched on October 17, exploring the storylines of supporting characters from Young Sheldon. Meanwhile, a Max spinoff featuring Big Bang Theory alums Kevin Sussman, Brian Posehn, and Lauren Lapkus is reportedly in development.
As these new projects expand the Big Bang universe, the possibility of seeing Cuoco reprise Penny seems more plausible than ever.
Cuoco’s Current Projects
While The Big Bang Theory holds a special place in her heart, Cuoco is busy with new ventures. Her Peacock series, Based on a True Story, is set to premiere its second season on November 21.
The dark comedy follows a realtor, a former tennis star, and a plumber who team up to exploit America’s fascination with true crime. Cuoco, who plays one of the leads, is thrilled about the upcoming season. “We had such a great time shooting season 1, and I think we made an even better season 2,” she shared. “It’s very funny. It’s very dark…and I’m thrilled.”
In addition to her acting career, Cuoco recently partnered with Subaru for National Make a Dog’s Day, reflecting her passion for animal advocacy.
A Legacy Worth Revisiting
Whether she’s exploring new roles or reflecting on her past, Kaley Cuoco’s connection to The Big Bang Theory remains undeniable. The series not only launched her career to new heights but also created a legacy that fans continue to celebrate. And if Cuoco has her way, Penny might just make a triumphant return.
