Why is Hailey’s storyline on Chicago P.D. Part 9 makes no sense
As loyal fans of the movie “Chicago P.D.” of NBC. happy to tell anyone who will listen, the writers of the long-running police procedural have done an incredible job of keeping its action tense, conflict intriguing, and characters interesting taste. Part of Dick Wolf’s “One Chicago” triple-threat series, “Chicago P.D” offers viewers one of the most compelling hours of television, focusing on a series of detectives and officers Dedicated Intelligence Unit patrols work within the city’s police department. Every Wednesday, the powerhouse law enforcement thriller follows episodes of “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago Med” – adding a powerful exclamation point to the three-hour “One Chicago” saga during the night.
As fans of the show will also tell you, “Chicago P.D.” Detective Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) is one of the most deeply compelling characters in the series. She’s a more complex character than almost anyone else in the entire “One Chicago” universe. Joining the series in the Season 4 episode “Fagin,” Upton arrived with a lot of determination –- and a lot of baggage.
The detective continues to experience heavier personal drama as the series progresses. In “Chicago P.D.” However, in season 9, some fans felt that Hailey’s increasingly tense story really made no sense and was in danger of going completely off the rails.
Chicago PD fans think the show is focusing too much on Hailey
Case in point: a recent discussion on Reddit about “Chicago P.D.” saw some fans reveal exactly how they felt about Upton’s rising career with IU. Hinting that it was Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati), not Hailey, who was shot by kidnapper Roy (Michael Maize) in the previous episode, Redditor u/januarysdaughter wrote: “I’m sorry, but I can’t help but feels like all this PTSD stuff should be BURGESS’ storyline and not Hailey’s. BURGESS was the one who got shot… Why are we ignoring her trauma?”
While Hailey is facing the heartbreaking truth that she killed a man, u/SativaInShadows agrees with their Redditor on who the real victim is here, writing: “Exactly she [ Burgess] was Roy’s victim but she miraculously recovered and her wounds healed.” has been passed down to Hailey.” Indeed, the general feeling among fans seems to be that, while Burgess deservedly demonstrated that she was suffering both physical and mental trauma, Hailey seemed to have the biggest reaction to the storyline. At least, u/BirdgirlLA certainly felt that way, commenting: “Agree. Is Hailey the writers’ golden girl? We need more Burgess!!!”
Taking all of this into account, we’re forced to ask: Will Upton’s wild plot twists begin to correct themselves in future episodes? Some fans clearly hope that happens. But one thing’s for sure: Without any unforeseen casting or writing surprises, “Chicago P.D.” viewers will have plenty of time to see how Hailey deals, or doesn’t deal, with the upheaval currently rocking her world.
