Will Trent season 3 gets a January 2025 premiere date (get the details)

Fans of the hit drama series Will Trent were left feeling disappointed when ABC announced earlier this year that Will Trent season 3 would not in fact be premiering in Fall 2024. But there is a great trade-off for fans, and it’s that when the series returns in January 2025, it will air weekly without any planned breaks.

With shows like 911 and Doctor Odyssey going on months-long hiatuses in the middle of their seasons (seriously, they’re both not coming back until March after their November mid-season finales), having a full season of Will Trent without any breaks will be greatly appreciated!

When does Will Trent season 3 premiere?

ABC recently announced that Will Trent season 3 will premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. It kicks off what will be a three-hour crime drama block that starts with Will Trent, followed by episodes of High Potential and The Rookie. In a recent interview with TVLine, the president of Disney Television Group Craig Erwich commented on why it was in their interest to have Will Trent season 3 premiere in early 2025.

Because the show is one of the “cornerstones” in their schedule, Erwich said that:

“It felt like the best way to platform those shows for success was to launch them in January, when we have this huge promotional platform in New Years Rockin’ Eve as well as college sports and Christmas programming.”

There were likely other reasons as well, but it sounds like a major factor for the premiere decision was because of marketing.

The best news is that Will Trent season 3 will be its biggest season yet with 18 episodes (the first two seasons had 13 and 10 episodes respectively). This means weekly episodes (pending any unexpected breaks) from January all the way until the beginning or middle of May 2025—and that is worth celebrating!Series co-creator Daniel Thomsen told Collider that having 18 episodes means being able to “play on a bigger chessboard.” Even though we don’t have any plot details yet for what is coming in new episodes, we can expect to see the fallout from the heavy season 2 finale where Will arrested Angie after finding out the truth about how she covered up for Crystal. Overall, we can expect Will Trent season 3 to be able to tell stories in ways that the first seasons couldn’t, simple because there is more space and time to do so.
