After Tracker Season 2 Premiere Reveals Why Character Went Missing, Here’s What One Star Told Us About Where the Show Will Go

Spoilers ahead for Tracker Season 2 premiere on CBS, titled “Out of the Past.”

Tracker is officially returning to primetime TV in 2024 to continue the story of Colter Shaw after he received a bombshell about his past in the Season 1 finale. The first case of the season starts innocently enough with a family missing from their car, but takes twists, turns, and then more twists until the crime and witness protection are revealed. A big question is what will happen to a character who will go missing in the future, and actress Fiona Rene – who plays Reenie – has opened up about her new partnership in the wake of the case.

How Tracker Wrote a Major Character on the Show
News broke before Tracker returned for CBS’ much-hyped premiere week that Robin Weigert would not be returning as a major character on the show, despite Season 1 ending with Teddi still being a very important part of Colter’s group along with his wife Velma (Abby McEnany). With McEnany still on the show, the question was how Tracker would write Teddi while keeping Velma.

The answer actually comes in two parts, the first being Velma’s explanation for why Teddi was absent from the first episode of the fall, as well as why she hasn’t been seeing her wife. Speaking to Colter, Velma revealed:

She’s going to be there for a while. She’s helping her mother sort things out… I got in the way, you could say, and that’s not really good. So I’m back.

Admittedly, there aren’t many details about what Teddi is helping her mother do or why it seems to be taking so long, but Tracker has been setting up marital conflict that could lead to a breakup to keep Abby McEnany as Velma. The show found a way to do that in the premiere in the form of a new partnership with none other than Reenie, which will be the second part of the answer.

Fiona Rene’s character recruited Velma to help set up her new office as she prepares to open her own criminal law firm. The two made a good team in “Out of the Past,” allowing Reenie to actually interact with someone on the team in person rather than just over the phone. So, what’s next?

What Fiona Rene Told CinemaBlend About Reenie and Velma
I spoke with Fiona Rene ahead of Tracker’s second season premiere, and she shared everything from the craziest part of playing Reenie opposite Justin Hartley to Reenie’s new partnership in Season 2 with Velma. When I pointed out to the actress that we didn’t really see much of Reenie interacting with Velma in Season 1, Rene responded:

At least not together! I’d like to think that the off-screen connection that we created in our friendship would actually translate to on-screen. Abby McEnany is amazing and such a unique talent. I was really lucky to spend time with her on set. It was so much fun. I think they’re coming into a similar place. Reenie’s on her own for the first time, starting her own business. It’s a lot of work.

While Reenie proved to be very capable of helping Colter out of difficult legal situations in Season 1, starting her own law firm is a whole other challenge. Rene went on to note some of the stress that comes with opening an LLC in your own name, including “the paperwork and stuff you have to file with the city and the county.” With all that on her shoulders, teaming up with Velma can only be a good thing. The actress further explained:

I feel like Reenie is in over her head doing a lot of this work herself. Meanwhile, and I won’t spoil anything, but Velma is in over her head doing some of it herself, so the two of them being able to lean on each other and develop a new friendship where they can really lean on each other personally and professionally is very solid. It’s a dream, and I think it’s going to build a foundation for the rest of the season.

Well, if there were any concerns that Tracker would struggle to get Velma stories without her regular co-star or Reenie being a part of Season 1, the Reenie and Velma team-up is a very promising twist to the debut. When asked if working directly with Abby McEnany stood out to her after Reenie spent much of Season 1 as a team member on the phone, Fiona Rene shared:

I felt very lucky to be able to work with Justin on the field in a lot of episodes last season, and we have some of that this season. But we’re like this group – Bobby, Velma, and Reenie – supporting the Tracker and
