Here’s When Herrmann (David Eigenberg) Will Return to Chicago Fire
Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) has been a beloved character on Chicago Fire since the first episode. We’ve seen him go through a lot, from supporting his wife Cindy as she battles cancer to the ups and downs of his own career. Now, he’s getting ready to take his fire chief exam, which could have huge implications for his future.
“He’s not ready,” Eigenberg told TV Insider about Herrmann’s feelings about the test. “He’s got a wife and kids. He’s not a very focused person. He focuses when things get tough. He’s a little bit like my parents in real life. When things get tough, they’re together, and the rest of the time it’s chaos. So I think he’s a little bit like that. And nothing comes easy with the Herrmann character, and confidence is not his strong suit, although he can blush and get inflated. And he knows what’s right.”
Fans may have noticed Herrmann was absent from Season 13, Episodes 6 and 7 of the show, but don’t worry: He’ll be back soon.

After being absent for the last two episodes, Herrmann will return to Chicago Fire for its fall finale (Season 13, Episode 8: “Quicksand”) on Wednesday, November 20 at 9/8c on NBC. The official synopsis for the episode reads: “Herrmann and Mouch prepare for their officer exams; Cruz receives a creepy premonition; Carver cares for a dog after its owner is injured during a call. (This confirms we’ll see Herrmann on screen.)
But is he ready to lead a fire department, 51st or not, as a captain?
“Do the pants fit?” Eigenberg told NBC Insider of Herrmann’s hesitation about taking on a leadership position. “Do the shoes fit? … For a lead role, I would take it, but you don’t prepare for that. I mean, you prepare, but how does life go?” You never know.”
