After introducing GBI agent Will Trent in the first episode last week, “Will Trent” has released its second episode. Here, the detective gets more clues about the possible culprit behind Emma’s kidnapping and tries his best to prepare a case. Along with that, the new episode also features a race against time to save Emma, when she is finally located and she is still stuck in a dangerous situation.
‘Will Trent’ Episode 2: Recap and Finale
“Will Trent” episode 2 picks up right where episode 1 left off, with Paul Campano arriving at Will’s house late at night, claiming to have accidentally shot the man he believed kidnapped Emma. After further questioning, Paul reveals that his daughter’s English teacher, Evan Bernard, is believed to be involved in her kidnapping. Paul confronted Evan at his home in a drunken state, and in a fit of rage, he shot the man. According to the father, Emma spent hours at Evan Bernard’s office and then asked to be transferred to another class, suggesting that something may have happened between her and Bernard. Will and Angie Polaski, who were at his home at the time, arrested Paul and went to Evan’s home to find that the English teacher had painfully dragged himself to the front door to lock it after he was shot in the front yard. This further suggested that Bernard was desperate to hide something in the house. Paul also said that the man was on the phone when he visited, making it clear to Will that Bernard was using a disposable cell phone. After the teacher was taken to the hospital and recovered from the gunshot wound, Will Trent came to question him, and this conversation made Bernard even more suspicious. The man claims that Emma transferred out of his class because she couldn’t handle the pressure and denies knowing the other murdered friend, Kayla, personally. When Will brings up Warren, the young man who kidnapped Emma first and then killed himself in the first episode, Bernard also denies knowing him and tries to avoid the discussion.
The hospital also finds Bernard’s disposable phone hidden in his pillow shortly after, and Will is now certain that the man is definitely the main culprit. However, around the same time, Abigail Campano, Emma’s mother, reports to the GBI that she received a ransom call. In a video sent to her, Emma appears frightened, but unharmed. She is being held against her will in a house, and the kidnappers have demanded $3 million in exchange for her freedom. Abigail was ready to pay the money to get her daughter back, claiming that her billionaire father would surely help her, but the detectives asked her not to. Will asked for six hours to conduct a more in-depth investigation before Abigail would pay. But this new revelation also meant that Bernard was not involved in the crime, as he was in the hospital and therefore under surveillance, or that he had an accomplice who made the call. With his new partner, Faith, Will went to the high school where Emma and Kayla attended, to look for more information about Evan Bernard. Although none of the students they spoke to informally revealed any incriminating information about Bernard’s character, the two detectives eventually found what they were looking for. The English teacher appeared to be having an affair with his student, Kayla.
School officials quickly move in to formalize the investigation, and detectives meet with the counselor, Mary Clark. When asked about Bernard’s scandalous relationship with a student, Mary denies knowing anything about it. Will now tries to prove the relationship and finds an easy way to do so. Kayla’s corpse reveals that she had consensual sex on the morning of her death, and the DNA sample is tested. When Paul shot Bernard, Bernard’s blood was splattered all over his shirt, and Will sends the shirt off to see if the two DNA samples match. The only problem, however, is that Will knows he doesn’t have enough time to wait for the DNA test results. When he meets Evan Bernard at school, after the man has been released from the hospital, Will lies to him that the DNA samples match and reveals that the teacher was in fact having an affair with his student. Knowing that his secret has been exposed, Bernard defends himself by saying that he did nothing wrong because the legal age of consent in Georgia is seventeen. However, school rules forbid any teacher from having such a relationship with a student, and Will’s clever lie pays off. Will and Faith immediately arrest Evan Bernard, and he is detained while further investigation is carried out.
