The Real Reason Carver Is Different in Chicago Fire This Season

In Season 13 of Chicago Fire, Sam Carver seems like a different man — almost like he’s moving through life in a daze. After returning from a break in Texas, he brought back a new girlfriend, which has added complications to his already tumultuous life. Meanwhile, his relationship with Violet has hit a rocky patch, as both characters avoid addressing their unresolved feelings and instead date other people. In an interview with TV Line, actor Jake Lockett shared insights into why Carver’s behavior is noticeably different this season, explaining that his inner conflicts have started to surface in new ways.

Carver’s Internal Struggles Spill Over

According to Lockett, Carver’s internal conflicts, which were previously kept under wraps, are now playing a more prominent role in his interactions with others. “He’s definitely a little more conflicted this season,” Lockett explained. “In past seasons, he’s been pretty straightforward about where he stands. But now, we’re seeing him face personal turmoil and interpersonal issues with other members of the firehouse, which forces him to retreat inward again. That’s the dynamic we’re exploring this season.”

Family Ties and Relationship Woes

Carver’s struggles aren’t just limited to his romantic life or work environment; his family issues continue to shape his mindset. This season kicked off with him returning to Chicago with a new girlfriend, Tori, and acting as though his connection with Violet never existed. Lockett elaborated on the strain in Carver’s relationship with Violet: “He opened up with big feelings for Violet, and when things blew up without even a proper conversation, it pushed him to shut down emotionally. It’s like he put up walls again.”

But Carver’s new relationship isn’t smooth sailing either. Tori has started noticing his emotional distance, which has only added to the tension. His troubles have spilled over into his performance at Firehouse 51, prompting Lieutenant Stella Kidd to intervene and address his lack of focus. In Episode 7, titled “Untouchable,” it appears someone within the firehouse will step in to give Carver a wake-up call.

A Turning Point for Carver in Episode 7?

Jake Lockett teased a pivotal moment in the upcoming episode, where respected members of the firehouse confront Carver about his behavior. “There’s an opportunity in this next episode for some real self-reflection,” Lockett shared. “It’s a moment where people I respect — both the actors and the characters — force Carver to take a hard look at himself. It’s going to be interesting to see how he responds, whether he rises to the challenge or falls back into old patterns.”

With the firehouse dynamic keeping everyone accountable, viewers are left wondering if this time will be different for Carver. Will he finally confront his issues head-on, or will he continue to spiral?
