How Mary’s Return To Pastor Jeff’s Church Sets Up The Big Bang Theory
Mary comes back to her old congregation.
After spending the last several months separated from her church because Pastor Jeff essentially kicked her and her family out, Mary finds her way back to the congregation in Young Sheldon season 7. Surprisingly, it is George who makes this happen. The Cooper patriarch personally reached out to Pastor Jeff about taking his wife back in, because she was slowly getting enticed into joining a mega-church spearheaded by a sleazy pastor. George thought it was better to have Mary spend her time in a familiar setting than get sucked into something that could potentially be worse.
Mary was racist towards Raj, anti-Semitic towards Howard, and misogynist towards Penny.
Despite the lack of direct reference to The Big Bang Theory, Mary’s return to Pastor Jeff’s church actually sets up her future in the nerd-centric sitcom. While the Cooper matriarch has always been religious, she was the most committed to being a Christian during The Big Bang Theory. Unfortunately, that came with some issues, as she often used her faith as a justification for her bad behavior, particularly towards Sheldon’s friends. Mary was racist towards Raj, anti-Semitic towards Howard, and misogynist towards Penny. Unfortunately, they were far too respectful to call her out on it.
The upcoming death of George could further push Mary toward her church. As previously established in Young Sheldon, she tends to take bad things happening as a punishment from God. The prequel has explored Sheldon’s mother’s crisis of faith a couple of times, but ultimately, she returns to what she knows, and that often results in her pushing her beliefs onto other people, which seems to be the case in Young Sheldon season 7, episode 6, “Baptists, Catholics and an Attempted Drowning,” as she butts heads with Mandy’s mother.
Will Mary Appear In Georgie And Mandy’s Young Sheldon Spinoff?
Georgie and Mandy will continue the Coopers’ Texas story.
Pitting Mary against Audrey isn’t only an interesting arc in Young Sheldon, but it may actually be part of laying the groundwork for Georgie and Mandy’s upcoming spinoff. In an effort to continue capitalizing on the popularity of the family comedy-drama, Chuck Lorre and his team have found a way to continue Young Sheldon beyond Sheldon’s move to California and George’s death by launching a sequel series. Not much is known about it thus far, but it is confirmed to tackle Georgie and Mandy’s life as newlyweds and young parents to Baby Cece.
Per The Big Bang Theory canon, Mary should be part of Georgie and Mandy’s Young Sheldon spinoff, since she maintained her connection to her firstborn after becoming a widow. That being said, CBS has yet to confirm any additional casting for the project other than its lead stars. For what it’s worth, Missy should also be part of the Young Sheldon offshoot, if CBS is sticking to continuity. However, Raegan Revord already revealed that she wasn’t invited to participate.
When Young Sheldon Season 7, Episode 6 Will Release
Young Sheldon is currently on a break.
Despite Young Sheldon’s already shortened final year, there won’t be a new episode of The Big Bang Theory prequel on March 21. This may sound surprising, but for avid viewers, this shouldn’t be anything new since the show tends to always take a week or two off the air around this time of the year. The reason stems from CBS’ broadcast of March Madness, a ratings winner for the network, hence why it takes over Young Sheldon’s prime timeslot for a couple of weeks during this period.
There will be a two-week break for the show starting this week, meaning that it will also not air any new episode for its March 29 schedule. Instead, Young Sheldon season 7, episode 6 will release on April 4, 2024. At this point, It’s uncertain if CBS is planning to do more mini-breaks in the final month and a half of the family comedy-drama, which is penciled to wrap up its run with a special one-hour offering on May 16. It’s worth noting that aside from March Madness, CBS also considers the sweeps period from late April to May.
Admittedly, the break is frustrating since it disturbs the show’s pacing. That being said, the hiatus is also helpful for the cast and crew to have a breather from production or to get ahead of its weekly schedule. It also allows those who aren’t fully caught up in Young Sheldon season 7 to get through the episodes they haven’t watched yet.
