Viewers say the same about the Bridgerton star’s dark drama on Netflix
Netflix viewers have been treated to a new horror series that has rocketed to the top of the trending charts. The Burning Girls, starring Samantha Morton and Bridgerton star Ruby Stokes, recently dropped on the streaming platform – but is it worth watching? Find out here… Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, to discuss, one person wrote: “Watched #TheBurningGirls on #Netflix. Really enjoyed it.” Another added: “OMG [damn] just finished the first episode of #theburninggirls on Netflix. Amazing! Maybe it’ll live up to @cjtudor’s amazing book.”

A third added: “Just finished @cjtudor’s The Burning Girls. The show was absolutely amazing and the book was amazing!”

Others, however, weren’t so sure, with one posting: “I’m watching The Burning Girls and honestly I’ve given up hope Netflix will give us any more decent series….. this is absolutely awful.” Another added: “The Burning Girls on Netflix. There’s 6 hours of my life I’ll never get back… advice – don’t bother!”

The series follows Reverend Jack Brooks, a single mother haunted by a tragedy from her previous post. The synopsis continues: “[Ruby] is her daughter, Flo, a teenager who marches to the beat of her own drum. The two arrive at Chapel Croft hoping for a fresh start, however, they soon discover the village is rife with intrigue and secrets.”

The star-studded cast also includes Sherlock’s Rupert Graves, Stranger Things actor Elodie Grace Orkin and The Crown’s Jane Lapotaire.

Speaking about the show to PA, Samantha said: “As a mother, the relationship between Jack and Flo is really interesting. I’ve played mothers before, but Jack and Flo have such a strong bond, and I think it’s just a beautiful, wonderful relationship and one that I wanted to explore. “Jack is a widower, which I think was really important for my character. I was a single mum until my daughter was about five, and I remember that the relationship between a mother and child – or a father and child, if you’re a single dad – is really, really intense, so I was drawn to that.

“That gradually changes as Flo changes and becomes distant from her mother and alienates. It’s a typical mother-daughter thing, where you have a bit of conflict and alienate and then come back and alienate again.”

Ruby’s starring role is one of several popular roles since leaving Bridgerton due to scheduling conflicts. The star, who played Francesca in seasons one and two, left the show to star in Lockwood & Co, which was sadly cancelled after one season. She has since starred in The Jetty and the films Madfabulous and Butterfly Stroke.

Speaking about Ruby’s departure, creator Chris Van Dusen said: “I loved Francesca, but we lost her in the middle of season two. After trying everything else, unfortunately she had to leave for reasons beyond our control. Maybe season three will be the lucky one.”
