Buck & Eddie from ‘9-1-1: Should They or Shouldn’t They Get Together?

Buck & Eddie from ‘9-1-1: Should They or Shouldn’t They Get Together?

9-1-1 not only does heart-pounding (and sometimes hard-to-watch) emergencies well—it also has some of our favorite relationships on TV. Just look at Bobby (Peter Krause) and Athena (Angela Bassett), Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracie Thoms), and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi), all of which are solid romances with characters who have overcome many trials both individually and together.

But what it doesn’t have is a workplace romance—though we do love it when Bobby and Athena team up to solve a case—and the show could easily change that with the other two series regulars. There have been fans who’ve wanted Buck (Oliver Stark) and Eddie (Ryan Guzman) to get together ever since Eddie showed up in the Season 2 premiere (Buck’s quick transition from hating the guy to being his biggest fan certainly helped), and we have to admit: It’s not like we don’t see the possibility.

But should 9-1-1 take Buck and Eddie there? (Before we get into any of this, we should note that there’s nothing to suggest Eddie isn’t straight. That said, the same was true before Buck began exploring his sexuality in Season 7.) Could this relationship be as strong as the show’s other major relationships? Or should it be avoided?

Below, we’ll break down the pros and cons of a potential “Buddie” romance. Share your thoughts in the poll and comments section. Also, check out our other Should/Shouldn’t They polls.

We have to admit: This is one of our favorite topics, and for good reason! There’s just something so special about watching a friendship grow, seeing that bond grow stronger and deeper, and being able to watch it every step of the way. We’ve seen Buck and Eddie go from strangers and enemies (at least initially, for a short time) to best friends.

Put one of them in danger and the other will freak out. For example: Eddie gets buried while saving a kid in “Eddie Begins” (Buck would dig the kid out with his bare hands if he had to); Eddie gets shot in “Suspicion”/”Survivors”; and Buck gets struck by lightning in “In a Flash.” And who can forget the fact that Buck gets Eddie’s son Christopher (Gavin McHugh) if Eddie dies? Nothing says how much someone means to another person and how much they trust them!

Friendships are just as important—and sometimes as rare as a relationship as meaningful or more than a romantic relationship on TV—and everything we see from these two could easily be explained by that. Instead of making Buck and Eddie a romance, 9-1-1 could easily continue to show them that.

There’s a reason none of their relationships rank high on our list of couples on the show. Buck’s current relationship with Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) might be his best relationship to date (although we know challenges are coming their way), and Eddie’s last relationship ended because his girlfriend caught him with his late wife. Maybe they both just need to look a little closer to home for a lasting relationship that can stand up to Bobby and Athena, Hen and Karen, Maddie and Chimney.

Although we think if 9-1-1 goes there with Buck and Eddie, that would be the end. Imagine how messy things could get at 118 and off-duty with a breakup—and one that’s not mature or consensual. Everyone would have to pick sides. Bobby (assuming he returns as captain) might have to transfer one of them to another shift. Christopher might get mad at his dad (again, assuming they’ve made up by then) about something involving Buck. Eddie might yell at Buck again in the grocery store.
